COACHES SAY YES TO YOUTHS

Emory & Henry football coach Lou Wacker and St.John's (Minn.) coach John Gagliardi, who is fourth all-time in victories, will headline the list of guests for the first Youth Education through Sports (YES) Clinic to be held the morning of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl Dec.9 in Salem.

In its third year as hosts of the Stagg Bowl, the NCAA Division III national championship game, the city of Salem and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference were given the opportunity to host the YES Clinic.

The YES Clinic, to be conducted at the Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium, is free to area youths and focuses on playing technique, mental preparation, strength and nutrition. In addition, a session with parents deals with NCAA compliance and initial eligibility.

John Shaner, a Salem High School graduate who organized last year's clinic for the Division I-AA championship game at Marshall University, is coordinating the clinic for Salem. Following a local luncheon Tuesday at the Salem Civic Center, Shaner said he already had 2,500 youths aged 10-18 on his mailing list and expects the total to reach 5,000 to 10,000.

Registration is limited to the first 500 to sign up. All participants will receive a variety of gifts, including a ticket to the game. The NCAA already has purchased 500 tickets from Salem for that purpose.

``The NCAA is putting everything back into the city with the program,'' said Civic Center director Carey Harveycutter.

Other collegiate coaches committed participate are Bridgewater's Michael Clark, Union's John Audino, Wabash's Greg Carlson, Larry Kindbom of Washington University, Bill Manlove of Delaware Valley College, Trinity (Texas) University's Steve Mohr, Allegheny's Ken O'Keefe, Central's Ron Schipper, Dave Warmack of Kalamazoo College and Mike Welch of Ithaca.

In addition, 12 area high school coaches and 24 ODAC athletes will participate.

This marks the first time the Stagg Bowl has had a YES Clinic. The men's lacrosse championship is the only Division III sport to have included the clinic in the past.
