TECH, UVA TO COMPETE ON TELEVISION

Virginia Tech and Virginia will compete for football viewers two straight weeks, as the state rivals' conference games will be aired for the next two Saturdays.

On Sept.30, Virginia Tech will play at Pitt, and Virginia will entertain Wake Forest in noon games on the Big East and ACC telecast packages, respectively. That follows this Saturday, when the Miami-Tech and Virginia-Clemson games will be aired at noon.

In the Roanoke-Lynchburg TV market, the Hokies' games will be shown by WSLS (Channel 10), the UVa games on WSET (Channel 13).

In other sports news:

Mike Griggs' goal in the second overtime lifted Virginia Tech past George Washington 2-1 in an Atlantic 10 men's soccer game in Blacksburg.

The Hokies (4-3-1, 4-1-1) tied the score in the last few minutes on a goal by Matt Whalen. George Washington (5-2, 1-1) had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Craig Jones just after halftime. Tech goalkeeper Jon DeLong played the entire 120 minutes and made five saves.

At Hampden-Sydney, Joe Holder scored the only goal early in the second half as Hampden-Sydney beat Roanoke 1-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer match. Hampden-Sydney is 6-2, 3-0. Roanoke is 4-2, 2-2.

Karin Treese scored two first-half goals to lift Washington and Lee to a 2-0 victory over Hollins in an ODAC women's soccer game. The Generals are 4-1, 2-0; Hollins is 3-2, 0-2.

Chris Boyle and Tina Boyce scored two goals as Roanoke defeated Virginia Wesleyan 4-0 in an ODAC field hockey game. Jen Pohanka had 18 saves in recording the shutout for the Maroons.

Jennifer Broderick scored at the 3:23 mark on a breakaway and Appalachian State made the goal stand in a 1-0 win over Radford in a field hockey match at Dedmon Center Field. Radford (2-5) out shot the Mountaineers (1-5) 22-9 but couldn't find the back of the net.
