Church gallery quilt show

FLOYD - The Old Church Gallery Quilters Guild presents its annual quilt show in the gym at Floyd Elementary School Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7-8. The show will include styles from traditional bed coverings to contemporary art quilts.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The show is sponsored by the Floyd County Woman's Club and several Southwest Virginia businesses. Admission is free.

Effie Brown of Check is this year's featured quilter. Brown is well known throughout the region for her prize-winning quilts, many of which will be on display.

Registration is open to the public. Quilters can register on Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bank of Floyd Community Room lower level. Winners will receive handcrafted ribbons and awards. For registration forms or information, call 929-4400 or 789-7561.

Christiansburg school hearing

CHRISTIANSBURG - There will be a public hearing on the presence of non-curriculum related students and organizations Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at Christiansburg High School.

The Shared Decision Committee of Christiansburg High School sponsors the program. The Committee invites the public to address this topic at the hearing or to provide written comments to the committee no later than Tuesday. Additional information relating to the options under consideration is available from the administrative offices at the high school.

Dance group plans benefit

BLACKSBURG- Virginia Tech's Contemporary Dance Ensemble will host a Coffee House Benefit at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Pedro's in Blacksburg. Area performers are welcome to sing, dance, read poetry, perform skits and exhibit art. Performers must pay the admission fee of $2 with student ID and $3 without to sign up first-come, first-served. Fiber and Sensor Technologies

BLACSKBURG - Fiber and Sensor Technologies, a new fiber optics company, will unveil its new building in the Blacksburg Industrial Park Monday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m.

Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, and town, state, university and business leaders will attend.

Founded in 1990, F&S is a spinoff of Virginia Tech's Fiber & Electro-Optics Research Center. The company is a maker of optical fiber-based sensors and instrumentation, passive and active optical fiber devises, and associated processing equipment. It has 25 full-time employees, and its annual revenue is $2 million.

The firm moved into its new, 8,000-square-foot building in July. The firm will be the state's only American-owned fiber manufacturing facility by 1997.

About half of F&S's employees are Virginia Tech graduates. The company's clients include the Department of Defense, NASA, and the Department of Energy.
