CITY OFFICIALS ALL WET? YES, IF YOUR AIM'S GOOD

Got a score to settle with Roanoke City Manager Bob Herbert?

Or a gripe over water and sewer service with Director of Utilities Kit Kiser?

Are you a firefighter or police officer with a beef against Public Safety Director George "Chip" Snead?

Here's your chance to get even - for a mere 50 cents.

Those city officials and others will be sitting on the wet seat in a dunking booth Saturday at Valley View Mall.

The booth and other activities will be part of the city's second annual Citizen Appreciation Day, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot of Spinnaker's restaurant.

"Citizen Appreciation Day is our chance, as city employees, to tell Roanoke citizens how much we appreciate their decision to live in the city," said Caroline Highfill, a social worker who is helping to coordinate the activities.

The event also features:

Children's face-painting.

A 1 p.m. a fashion show, with city employees' kids doing the modeling.

An all-day game in which residents may win prizes for correctly answering questions about city government.

Blood pressure checks.

Fingerprinting of children and home security safety tips by the city police.

The Fire Department's new ladder truck.

The dunking booth is the only thing that's not free. For 50 cents, you can buy two balls; for $1, five. Proceeds go to the Rescue Mission's Family Shelter.

The dunking runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Snead sitting for an hour as the first target. Kiser will be up from 1 to 2 p.m.; Herbert from 2 to 3 p.m. Other officials will take the remaining slots.
