IN SERVICE

Navy Seaman Apprentice Douglas Tucker recently departed on a six-month overseas deployment aboard the cruiser USS Bunker Hill, as part of the USS Independence Battle Group.

Tucker is a 1994 graduate of Pulaski County High School. He joined the Navy in June 1994. He is the son of Warren and Edith Tucker of Pulaski.

Navy Lt. Michael Barnes recently returned from a four-month overseas deployment to the Northern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea aboard the figate USS Aubrey.

A 1987 graduate of Blacksburg High School, Barnes joined the Navy in 1991 after he received a bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University. He is the son of Michael and Carole Barnes of Blacksburg.

Marine Pfc. Christopher Stanley of Blacksburg recently graduated from the basic hygiene equipment operator course at the Marine Corps Engineer School, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Stanley joined the Marine Corps in January 1995. A 1994 graduate of Blacksburg High School, he is the son of Kathy Blankenship.

Three area men recently completed 11 weeks of training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Marine Pvt. John Long, son of Kenneth Long of Radford completed the necessary training to earn the title Marine.

Marine Pvt. Joseph Cahill and Marine Pvt. Kenneth Gilbert both completed 11 weeks of basic training, designed to challenge new Marine recruits. Cahill is a 1993 graduate of Giles County High School.

Gilbert is the son of Harry and Helene Gilbert of Rich Creek.
