UNION TARGETS USAIR

The Communications Workers of America is trying to organize USAir employees at various airports, including Charlotte-Douglas International. USAir has about 7,100 employees in Charlotte, including about 300 in customer service positions.

A union spokesman said the CWA had no immediate plans to organize USAir workers in Roanoke but did not rule out future action.

The ticket and reservation workers are the only large groups of USAir employees not represented by a union. They rejected an organizing attempt by the United Steelworkers of America last summer.

To force a union representation election, 35 percent of eligible employees have to sign cards petitioning federal labor authorities.
