DEMONS DOMINATE ON GROUND IN 27-7 WIN

Christiansburg came up with the big plays and used a punishing ground game to overpower Lord Botetourt 27-7 on Friday night in a non-district game in Christiansburg.

The Blue Demons (1-3) scored their first touchdown with 5:06 to go in the first quarter when Rocky Gravely blocked a punt and Matt Wright recovered in the end zone.

Christiansburg then forced a fumble and converted it into its second score, a 1-yard touchdown run by Larry Carter with 4:00 to play in the half. The big play in the drive was a 33-yard dash by Chris Epperly, who added the extra-point kick.

The Demons broke it open with 13 points in the third quarter, including Mike Scott touchdown runs of 16 and 64 yards.

Scott, a junior tailback, finished with 147 yards on 10 carries. Carter rushed 17 times and added 100 yards to Christiansburg's total of 319.

The only touchdown for Lord Botetourt (0-3) came on a 30-yard pass play from Seth Meyers to Jeremy Conner with nine seconds remaining.

Wesley Cox led the offense for the Cavaliers with 81 yards rushing.

Blacksburg 27, Alleghany 19: Tucker LaForce rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns as the Indians won a back-and-forth non-district game in Low Moor.

LaForce carried 21 times and scored on runs of 1, 10 and 3 yards, the last touchdown coming with 1:02 left to play.

Alleghany (0-4) had scored with 4:28 left and missed a two-point conversion to trail 20-19.

When Blacksburg (1-3) took the ensuing kickoff, LaForce was entrusted with moving the ball, as well as the clock. He carried five times in a seven-play drive and broke one run for 37 yards to move the Indians into scoring position.

Oliver Jordan gained 106 yards on 22 carries and had one touchdown for Alleghany.

Bath County 39, Franklin (W.Va.) 19: Ivan Franklin ran for two scores and threw for two as the unbeaten Chargers rolled in a non-district game.

Franklin scored on runs of 75 and 19 yards en route to 168 yards rushing on 19 carries. He completed three passes for 104 yards, including touchdown passes of 65 and 24 yards to Cory Wolfe.

Jamie Carroll added 158 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Bath County (4-0). Franklin is 0-2.

Liberty 42, Altavista 8: In Altavista, the Minutemen (3-1, 2-1) used an accurate passing attack, led by quarterback J.J. Coles, to defeat the Colonels (1-3, 1-2) in a Seminole District game.

Coles completed 91 percent of his passes (11 of 12) for 140 yards and accounted for four touchdowns - three passing and one rushing.

Jerry Staples led Liberty (3-1, 2-1) with 61 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Parry McCluer 34, Craig County 6: In New Castle, Nathan Floyd ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Fighting Blues past the Rockets in the Pioneer District.

Parry McCluer (3-1 overall, 1-0 district) jumped on top 20-0 in the first half and cruised. The Blues rolled up 347 total yards, 329 on the ground. Robert Snider, who had a 34-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, finished with 112 yards on eight carries.

Robert Blankenship's 84-yard kickoff return supplied the only score for Craig (0-4, 0-2) in the third quarter.

Glenvar 21, Floyd County 20: In Floyd, the Highlanders escaped with a non-district victory when a two-point conversion pass fell incomplete as the Buffaloes went for a victory in the final two minutes.

Floyd County quarterback Craig Reed connected with Matti Broom on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:22 left and the Buffaloes (0-4) eschewed a tie in favor of a two-point play.

Glenvar (2-1) scored Its final touchdown with 8:54 to play when Corey Willis bolted 28 yards. Benji Linkous and Chris Carroll scored the Highlanders' other touchdowns.

Nick Wohn returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to get Floyd County on the scoreboard quickly, and Matt Bishop went 3 yards for the Buffaloes' other touchdown.

Bland County 20, Shawsville 10: John Michael Newberry had six carries for 48 yards and two touchdowns as the Bears rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Shawnees in non-district action.

Shawsville (1-2) took an early lead when Scott Holloman scored on a 2-yard run. Mark Akers stretched the lead to 10 with a 29-yard field goal.

Newberry put the Bears (3-1) on the board with a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Jason Hancock staked Bland County to a 14-10 lead with another 2-yard run.

Newberry scored an insurance touchdown from the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter.

Holloman had 12 rushes for 82 yards for Shawsville.

Laurel Park 13, Gretna 9: In Martinsville, Josh Crabtree picked off a pass in the last minute of the game to preserve the Lancers' Piedmont District victory over the Hawks.

Anthony Lanier led Laurel Park (1-2, 1-1) with 126 yards on 16 carries. Lanier accounted for two-thirds of the Lancers' offense.

Gretna (0-3) had four turnovers. The Hawks were led by tailback David Calloway, who rushed for 140 yards on 13 carries.

James River 21, Galax 0: In Buchanan, tailback Shahan Burrell rushed for 88 yards and scored a touchdown in a non-district game dominated by the Knights' defense.

James River (3-1) held Galax (0-4) to 55 yards total offense. Defensive tackle Johnny Burrell anchored a solid front line with seven tackles for minus-7 yards.

The Knights scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters. Shahan Burrell, who also had two receptions for 64 yards, had a 10-yard run in the first quarter, Brian LeFlore scored from 8 yards in the second and Mark Whiting tacked on a 15-yard touchdown run in the third. Billy Joe Carter converted all three extra-point kicks.

Rural Retreat 35, George Wythe 0: The football rarely left the ground in Wytheville as neither the Indians (2-2, 1-1) nor the Maroons (1-3, 1-2) gained a single yard passing in Rural Retreat's Hogoheegee District victory.

Ronnie Six and quarterback Archie Arnold were the big men for the Indians, accounting for all of Rural Retreat's points. Arnold rushed five times for 62 yards, including touchdown runs of 1 and 10 yards. He also lofted a pair of two-point conversion passes in the victory. Six dashed into the end zone three times, on runs of 3, 57, and 43 yards.

Rural Retreat did not attempt a pass in the game, other than three conversion tries, one of which failed.

George Wythe was 0-for-10 in the air, including one interception.

Pocahontas 26, Fort Chiswell 17: In Pocahontas, the Pioneers (2-2) were held to minus-24 yards rushing as they fell to the Indians in non-district action.

Randy Shupe and Kevin Williby provided the 1-2 punch for Pocahontas (3-1) as they combined for more than 200 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Shupe racked up 127 yards, including touchdown scampers of 7 and 8 yards. Williby just missed 100 yards rushing, gaining 96 yards and scoring one touchdown.

Carroll County 3, Grayson County 0: In Hillsville, the Cavaliers capitalized on four Blue Devils turnovers as Stacy Dalton's 27-yard field goal in the second quarter proved to be the difference in a non-district matchup.

Defense dictated the game as Carroll County (1-3) finished with 74 yards, all on the ground.

Grayson County (1-3) gained 55 of its 72 yards through the air.
