His Golden Eagles fell 33-14 to Seminole District opponent Jefferson Forest, but the game was Staunton River's best effort against the Cavaliers this decade.
Jefferson Forest is now 3-1 overall and 3-1 in the district; Staunton River stands 2-1, 2-1.
In five previous meetings since 1990, the Cavaliers had outscored Staunton River by a cumulative score of 242-35.
Friday night's score might have been more lopsided if Jefferson Forest hadn't fumbled the ball away three times in the second half, killing scoring drives.
Led by the play of two freshmen, the Cavaliers jumped out of the gate in typical fashion, scoring twice in the game's first quarter.
Forest's opening drive required just four running plays and a 15-yard facemask penalty to move the ball 80 yards. Freshman quarterback Jertron Evans scampered 27 yards for the TD.
After failing to move the ball on its next possession, Staunton River attempted to punt from its own end zone. Cavalier defender Frank Wade was one of four players to swarm the punter, and Wade, another ninth-grader, recovered the ball for a second score.
The Golden Eagles put on their most exciting drive in the final 29 seconds of the half.
Trailing 19-0 after Nick Mistretta's one-yard plunge, Jarrett Ferguson escaped a handful of tackles to return the kickoff to the Cavaliers' 33.
With 15 seconds left in the half, Eagles QB Danny Thomas completed his first pass attempt of the game, a 24-yarder to tight end Jeremy Wright.
Wright moved to the nine, before he was hauled down with :09 remaining.
After an incomplete pass, Staunton River scored on the final play of the half, a halfback option pass from Kevin Martin to Daniel Welch.
