Schools win grants to help save energy

PULASKI - Schools in Pulaski and Wythe counties are among 22 institutions in Virginia that won matching state grants for energy-saving conservation measures.

Pulaski County will get $31,873 to insulate the roof of Riverlawn Elementary School and for a variety of energy-conservation projects at Pulaski County High School. The local match is $9,730. It is estimated that the measures will save $7,605 annually in energy costs.

Wythe County will get $29,692 for energy-efficient fluorescent interior and exterior lighting fixtures and exit signs, for a local share of $13,758. Annual energy cost savings should amount to $6,321.

Wythe County Community Hospital will get a $42,591 grant to install fluorescent lighting, with a match of $38,090 from the hospital. Annual savings are estimated at $15,796.

The grants come from the Virginia Institutional Conservation Program, which started in 1979 as part of the National Energy Conservation Policy Act.

Jack Tale Players to be in Wytheville

WYTHEVILLE - The Jack Tale Players will perform at 7 p.m. Friday in the Grayson Hall Commons on the Wytheville Community College campus.

The performers, based at Ferrum College, offer traditional music and stories from the Blue Ridge Mountains in their touring plays. This performance is sponsored by the WCC Cultural Affairs Committee.

Admission is 50 cents for children and students. An adult accompanied by at least one child will be admitted free. Otherwise, each adult will pay $1.

The Players have given more than 1,650 performances since they were established in 1975.

Sports Hall of Fame honors local athletes

WYTHEVILLE - Three new members of the Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame have been named.

Tom Bralley, Bobby Bralley and Roy Shinault were inducted Friday at halftime ceremonies during the third annual Wytheville Office Supply/WYVE Radio Sports Hall of Fame game at George Wythe High School.

The Hall of Fame started in 1987 and has more than 50 members. Inductees' names are placed on the Sports Monument at Withers Park in Wytheville.

Pulaski chamber seeks nominations

PULASKI - The Pulaski Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its Business Executive of the Year for 1995.

Chamber members are being asked to submit nominees to the chamber office by Saturday.

New River Community College President Ed Barnes received the honor for 1994. Other recipients, moving back from 1993 to 1978, were: Robert Ingram, Carol Brockmeyer, Billy Smith, Hiawatha Nicely, Ron Chaffin, Charles Lee Bushong, Randall Edwards, Bill Elmore, Clyde Garrison, J.R. Dobyns, H.W. Huff Jr., Sidney Clower, B.C. Wampler, Claud Kirkland, A.J. Smith Jr. and Robert A. Hudson Jr.

Wythe County schools adopt weapons ban

WYTHEVILLE - The Wythe County School Board has adopted a weapon policy banning firearms, toy and look-alike guns, knives, razors, slingshots, Oriental star throwing weapons, brass or metal knuckles, blackjacks and fighting chains.

The policy, recommended by the Virginia School Boards Association, prohibits possession of any such weapon in any school building, on school grounds, in school vehicles or at any school-sponsored activity.

In other business last week, the School Board approved Debbie Stone as assistant principal at George Wythe High School in Wytheville and Rusty Beamer as administrative assistant. Both appointments are retroactive to the start of the school term.
