HIGHLANDERS SLIP PAST WINTHROP

Radford forward Ian Spooner scored the only goal of the match at the 16:45 mark to lead the Highlanders past Winthrop 1-0 in a men's soccer match Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C.

Spooner beat keeper Devin VanDerWende, from five yards away.

Radford improves to 5-1-1, 1-0 and Winthrop drops to 3-4, 0-1.

In other soccer news:

In Salem, Meredith Arnott scored three goals to lead Roanoke College to a 6-0 victory over Marymount.

In Ashland, Randolph-Macon defeated Roanoke 2-0 in a men's Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.

Mike Henning scored the game's first goal in the 55th minute and Mark Grissom put away the game for Roanoke (4-3, 2-3) with the final goal in the 84th minute. Randolph-Macon (6-3, 3-1) outshot the Maroons 11-9.

In Ashland, Randolph-Macon's Woman's College dominated Hollins 11-0 in an ODAC women's match.

Erin Hamm led the Yellow Jackets (7-0, 2-0) with three goals and Kim Myers added two. Hollins was outshot 34-6.

In Radford, Amanda Lebo scored two goals, one a minute into the second overtime period, as Radford tied Buffalo 3-3 in a non-conference women's game.

Megan Brooks scored for Radford 20 minutes into the game. After a goal by Jennifer Devita of Buffalo, Lebo netted a goal to put Radford ahead 2-1 at the half. Buffalo tied the score six minutes into the second half. Buffalo added a goal in the first overtime but Lebo got her second goal to tie the score in the second extra period.

Virginia Wesleyan downed Washington and Lee 3-0 in an ODAC men's game in Lexington, handing the Generals their first loss of the season. The Marlins are (7-0-1, 1-0). The Generals are (4-1, 1-1).

The Ferrum's men's team worked overtime to defeat Christopher Newport 3-2 in a Dixie Conference game in Ferrum.

Adam Fowler and Jim Powell scored Ferrum's two regulation goals. The overtime tally was scored by Bryan Knatz.

The Wingate women's team defeated Ferrum 4-3 in overtime in a women's match in Ferrum.

The Panthers' goals were scored by Susan Sautter, Marie Barrickman and Jennifer Thomas.

\ ETC. SMART race postponed by rain

Saturday's racing action at Franklin County Speedway was rained out. The Southern Modifies Auto Racing Teams event will be made up on Oct.7.

In Ashland, Christine Boyle scored two goals as Roanoke shut out Randolph-Macon 2-0 in overtime. The Maroons (3-0) got 15 saves from goalie Jen Polanka. The Yellow Jackets are 4-1.

In Baltimore, Jennie Henchion and Danielle Iorio paced the Radford women's cross country team as the Highlanders captured the Retriever Invitational championship at Maryland-Baltimore County.

In the men's race, Sean O'Flaherty finished second in 27:04 to lead the Radford men to a second-place finish. Host UMBC won the title.

In Lexington, Marshal swept both the men's and women's competitions at the VMI Invitational.

Brian DeRose won the individual race with a time of 26:40 as Marshall finished with 39 points.

Maureen Hackett ran the course in 20:04 to lead Marshall to the women's title. The Thundering Herd garnered the first six positions and won the competition with 15 points.

Paced by senior Brad Paye's fourth-place finish, the Washington and Lee men's team finished second at the Dickinson Open. Tenth-ranked Haverford win the competition.

Paye ran the course in 24:45, and teammate Jason Cullen finished in seventh place. In the women's race, Josephine Schaeffer was the individual winner in a course-record time of 17:40.

In Durham, N.C., Virginia Tech's women's team defeated Yale and lost to Duke in a double-duel meet. Tech beat Yale 17-46 and fell to the host Blue Devils 25-32.
