JAMES MADISON DODGES A BULLET

Mike Cawley ran for two touchdowns and threw for the winning score in overtime as James Madison escaped with a 28-27 victory over Villanova in a Yankee Conference game Saturday in Villanova, Pa.

Under the conference's overtime rules, each team had a possession from the opponent's 25-yard line in the extra period.

In overtime, Cawley hit Jay Jones with a 15-yard touchdown pass on the Dukes' fifth play from scrimmage. The extra-point kick made it 28-21. Clint Park made it 28-27 four plays later on a 3-yard keeper, but the Wildcats couldn't get into the end zone on a two-point conversion try.

James Madison (3-1 overall, 2-0 Yankee) forced overtime when D'Artagnan Townes scored on a 4-yard run with 2:41 to play.

Cawley completed 23 of 43 passes for 324 yards and rushed 14 times for 48 yards, including touchdown runs of 11 and 1 yards.

Anthony Cowsette carried 19 times for 118 yards and a touchdown for Villanova (0-3, 0-2).

In other games involving Virginia teams:

William and Mary 39, New Hampshire 0: The Tribe (2-2, 2-1) forced seven fumbles and intercepted three passes en route to its second consecutive shutout, and Derek Fitzgerald rushed for two scores as William and Mary overwhelmed the Wildcats (0-3, 0-3) in the Yankee Conference.

The victory was coach Jimmye Laycock's 100th in 16 seasons with the Tribe. He has 72 losses and two ties at William and Mary.

Fitzgerald rushed for 87 yards, and Ron Harrison intercepted two passes for the Tribe.

New Hampshire drove to the William and Mary 4 with less than a minute to play, but the Tribe sacked quarterback Matt Cassano twice to preserve the shutout.

Liberty 41, Delaware State 14: Antwan Chiles completed 21 of 33 passes for 309 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Flames (3-1) past the Hornets (0-3) in Dover, Del.

Chiles connected with Robert Butz on an 86-yard scoring strike with 4:17 left in the first quarter. Liberty scored again when cornerback Craig Henry picked off a pass by Dennis Jones and ran 65 yards for a touchdown. The kick failed, leaving the Flames with a 13-0 lead and they never looked back.

Hampden-Sydney 16, Guilford 0: Brian DeFade ran for two touchdowns, and the Tigers' defense made them stand in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the Quakers in Greensboro, N.C.

Hampden-Sydney (1-2, 1-0) limited Guilford to 124 yards total offense, including 40 yards passing. Of their 12 possessions, the Quakers (1-1, 0-1) went three-downs-and-out 10 times. They converted on one of 15 third downs.

Emory & Henry 32, Davidson 0: J.D. Davis ran for 197 yards and two touchdowns and former Patrick County High School standout Andy Stanley also rushed for two scores as the Wasps (3-0) overwhelmed the Wildcats (1-2) in Emory.

Davis carried 22 times and scored on runs of 42 and 2 yards. Stanley added 2- and 7-yard touchdown runs for the Wasps.

Chris Helvey's 1-yard run in the fourth quarter capped the scoring on a day when Emory & Henry picked up 336 yards on the ground.

Randolph-Macon 30, Chowan 7: George Bland barely completed a third of his throws (11 of 21), but connected on two touchdown passes to Bryan Lewis as the Yellow Jackets (2-1) defeated Braves (0-1-1) in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Clinch Valley 28, Bridgewater 14: Greg Thomas rushed for 163 yards and four touchdowns as the Highland Cavaliers (4-0) beat the Eagles (0-3) in Wise. Thomas, a 5-foot-8, 188-pound tailback, had scoring runs of 2, 5, 23 and 1 yards among his 26 carries.
