FERRUM NOTCHES 15-6 WIN OVER I-AA SQUAD

David Waddell kicked three field goals and Millard Vining scored the game's lone touchdown on a five-yard run early in the second quarter to lead Ferrum to a 15-6 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday before a crowd of 1,036 at CSU Stadium.

The loss was the 19th in a row for the Buccaneers, the second longest in Division I-AA, and dropped Charleston Southern to 0-4. Ferrum evened its record at 2-2.

Waddell opened the scoring with 1:39 left in the first quarter with a 40-yard field goal to give the Division III Panthers a 3-0 lead.

Jermaine Jenkins fumbled for Charleston Southern following a seven-yard pass reception on the Buccaneers' next possession, and Ferrum took advantage of the opportunity.

The Panthers drove 27 yards in four plays with Vining scoring from five yards out with 14:27 left in the second quarter.

Waddell missed the extra point, leaving Ferrum up 9-0.

Ferrum got on the board again 11 seconds before halftime, driving to the Charleston Southern 14 before settling for a 31-yard field goal by Waddell and a 12-0 halftime advantage.

Waddell's third field goal, a 27-yarder with 9:17 left in the third quarter, gave Ferrum a 15-0 lead.

The Buccaneers got on the board for the first time following an interception by cornerback Maurice Gerald, who returned the pickoff 24 yards to the Ferrum 22. Russell Gibson scored his second touchdown of the season on a nine-yard run with 4:53 left in the third quarter, but Clay Williams missed the conversion, leaving Charleston Southern behind 15-6.

Gibson rushed for a season-high 95 yards on 22 carries, and Wilbur Christy led the Panthers with 61 yards on 20 attempts.
