After Josh Cole's 93-yard kickoff return sparked the Paladins (2-2 overall, 1-0 conference) to a 34-24 halftime lead, Bonaventure took control. The junior quarterback, who was injured in the opening series of Furman's opener at Georgia Tech, struck with three touchdown passes in the third quarter on plays covering 40, 82 and 53 yards.
``We did a great job executing the offense, and when we're executing we're going to score a lot of points and win some ballgames,'' said Bobby Johnson, the Paladins' coach.
VMI quarterback Al Lester turned in a solid performance, throwing for 235 yards and rushing for 60. Lester completed 17 of 32 throws, with Jeff Hubbard on the receiving end of a school-record 13. Hubbard finished with 183 yards receiving.
But coach Bill Stewart wasn't happy with the performance by the Keydets (2-2, 1-1).
``We didn't play like we have the past two games tonight,'' Stewart said, referring to victories over Liberty and East Tennessee State, ``and I'm very disappointed about that. We are going to have an accountability check.''
The teams combined for 1,022 yards of total offense.
