CELEBRATIONS - ANNIVERSARIES

Bobbitt anniversary

Lewis D. and Thelma Bobbitt celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary on August 22, 1995 at the Western Sizzlin Steak House-Civic Center. The celebration was hosted by Amy Bayse, her husband, Jimmy, daughter, Elizabeth M. Bobbitt and special friends, Julie, Scott and Katie Nagley.

The couple were married on August 22, 1955 in the Boxley Building, Roanoke. They have lived in Roanoke for 50 years. She is the former Thelma Overton of Virginia Beach. They have two daughters Amy Bobbitt Bayse of Lynchburg and Elizabeth M. Bobbitt of Blue Ridge, and 5 grandchildren.

He retired from The Roanoke Times & World News after 45 years of service. She retired from Rainbow Bread Co. after 16 years of service. They are members of the Roanoke Hockey Booster Club and the Golden Years Club.

Out of town guest attending the celebration were Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Wade and sons, from Virginia Beach.

Carter anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Walker R. Carter, Jr., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Brandon Oaks. On September 5th, the residents of Brandon Oaks were the guests at a reception following dinner. On September 10th, the couple was honored at a reception in the afternoon with family and other friends in attendance. Special guests from their wedding party were Nancy Sowers Mutter, bridesmaid; Marcia Larson, soloists; and Trilby Meador Garst, organist. The original wedding cake top depicting a soldier and bride was used on their anniversary cakes. Mr. Carter served in the U.S. Army from April 1941 to November 1945. The receptions were hosted by their daughters and sons-in-law, Emiliee and Ted Garman, Dan and Nancy Eitner and Natalie and Dudley Woody.

The couple was married on September 5, 1945, at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. Mrs. Carter is the former Natalie Dehart, a native of Roanoke. Mr. Carter has lived in Roanoke for 50 years. He is retired Clerk of Circuit Court for the city of Roanoke. She is a former kindergarten teacher with the Roanoke City Public Schools. Mr. Carter has been a member of the Civitan Club since 1948 and is a past president of the Roanoke club. Mrs. Carter is a member of the Woman's Club of Roanoke and a former president of the club. They are both members of the Thursday Morning Music Club and South Roanoke United Methodist Churc h.

The couple has five granddaughters, Lee Garman and Cathie Garman Secrest, Lauren, Nancy and Michelle Woody. Also, two step-grandchildren, Steven and Brianne Eitner.

\ Hartman anniversary

Ira Silas and Margaret Henry Hartman celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a reception at the Poage's Mill Church of the Brethren Sunday, September 17, 1995, with families and a host of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Hartman have been long time members at Poage's Mill.

They were married at her home on September 15, 1945, by their pastor, Dr. H. Lawrence Rice.

Mrs. Hartman retired from F.W. Woolworth and Mr. Hartman retired from Caldwell Sites.

King anniversary

William Paul and Mary Alice King of Roanoke, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were married on September 21, 1945. They have four daughters, one son, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

\ Sharpe anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene J. Sharpe celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 17, 1995 at the Jefferson Center. The reception was a gift from their children, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Sharpe and Dr. and Mrs. John L. Eby, Jr. Family and friends compiled a memory book for them, and music was provided by Beth Dechent, harpist.

Mr. Sharpe is a retired hospital administrator, formerly employed by HCA. Mrs. Sharpe formerly was employed as office manager for the United Way. They now live in Salem and are active members of Grandin Court Baptist Church, where he serves on the Finance Committee and she sings in the Senior Choir, the Grand-N-Glory Singers.

Willis anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Willis of Roanoke, formerly of Martinsville, celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary on September 23rd, 1995. They were married September 23rd, 1924 in Danville.

They have two children, a daughter, Barbara Papit of Seminole, Fla.; a son, Allen Willis of Roanoke; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Willis is the former Frances Patterson of Martinsville.

They reside at Our Lady of the Valley Retirement Home.
