EMBATTLED COACH REFUSES TO QUIT

A high school baseball coach who faces possible firing over the team's use of a Ku Klux Klan symbol turned down a chance to resign last week.

Prince William School Superintendent Edward Kelly offered Brentsville High School assistant coach Matt Ondrof the option of resigning rather than being fired, but Ondrof's lawyer said his client wants to face an Oct. 2 public hearing before the School Board to fight for his job.

The baseball team at the Nokesville school drew a symbol called ``the Well'' on the field before games for good luck. A circle divided into quadrants, it supposedly represents four hooded Klansmen staring down at a black man in a well.

Kelly ordered an investigation after the Potomac News of Woodbridge reported the use of the symbol July 12. The investigation found that the team had been drawing the symbol for at least four years.
