"This is all new, so we are just learning how to operate in a shared decision-making process, and we've made some mistakes. I think that faculty were upset because decisions had already been made before our meeting," said Jill Alcorn.
Radford's president of three months, Douglas Covington, unveiled a series of budget cuts last week after fall enrollment dropped 418 from 1994 fall enrollment. Some faculty members were upset they had not had more input before cuts were instituted - although the need for cuts was not disputed.
Alongside cuts to administrative departments and professional travel are cuts to part-time faculty - which translates to fewer classes.
Covington met Thursday with some faculty, and said last week that he wanted their input - but he had to move on the current shortfall. He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Meantime, a subcommittee of the new Senate, which met for the first time last week, may bring the full Senate a report of recommended adjustments to the new cuts next week, said George Santopiedro, a professor on the committee.
"We'll do what we can," he said.
Of Thursday's meeting, Alcorn said: "I understand, much better, Dr. Covington's point of view, and I think he understands ours better, too."
