NRCC IS HOST TO 1995 SENIOR POETRY AWARDS

New River Community College host to 1995 Seniors Poetry Contest awards

This quilt upon my bed,

Is like a book, to be read.

There is a story in every patch,

Uneven pieces never match.

Nimble fingers from strong loving hands,

Made fancy stitches around the bands.

Checkered gingham from my pinafore,

Striped curtains that hung over the door.

A strip of serge from Dad's old pants,

The ones he wore to the country dance.

When winter comes, and the north winds blow,

I'll snuggle under that quilt, and wait for the snow.

- "Patch Work Quilt" by Rose Burnett, Radford

The room was filled with smiling faces, bright autumn flowers and the sound of mellowed voices reading from the heart. Award recipients rose to the sound of applause and stood before the gathering to read their winning poems. Laughter came easily for humorous poems while more serious pieces inspired thoughtful silences or small sighs. At the end, handshakes and hugs abounded at an awards reception for the poetry contest sponsored by New River Community College's Division of Arts and Sciences. The event was held Friday at the college.

The 17th Annual Poetry Contest For Senior Citizens resulted in 10 winners from the New River Valley. The local winners were Vivian Brezeale, Rose Burnett, Irving Burton, Caroline Pace Chermside, Solomon Goldstein, Ed Moorer, Devota Pack, Jeffery Stewart, Nancy Jean Thorton, and Eloise Turner.

NRCC's Debbie Douthat and Shirley Mann coordinated the contest. Douthat is excited by the number of seniors participating in the contest year after year. The level of participation and interest inspired Douthat to create a second contest last year for short stories.
