Rader building new facility in Daleville

Botetourt County has issued a building permit for a $900,000 Rader Funeral Home at Daleville.

Ben Rogers, general manager of five Lotz and Rader funeral homes in the Roanoke Valley, said he expects the new facility to be under roof in 30 to 40 days and complete by Jan. 1. The Dana B. Kenyon Co. of Jacksonville, Fla., is general contractor.

The 9,000-square-foot building, with a chapel and three viewing rooms, will replace the Rader chapel in Troutville. That building will be sold.

Rogers said the new site will give Rader a more central location and better parking for visitors.

Both Lotz and Rader funeral homes are owned by Service Corporation International, a Houston-based firm that runs 2,550 funeral homes nationwide.

Apco reorganizes its line crews

Appalachian Power Co. announced Tuesday a reorganization of its transmission line crews as a result of an eight-month in-house study to provide better service.

The number of work-base locations is being increased from five to nine and crews are being redesigned, said Ron Poff, Apco's transmission manager. Crews will be located within an hour of every point in the company's system, cutting response time by up to a third in some areas, he said.

Regional crew headquarters will be in Roanoke and Charleston and Bluefield, W.Va., with supporting offices in Abingdon, Fieldale, Lynchburg and Pulaski in Virginia, and Beckley and Kenova in West Virginia. The reorganization will not affect employment, the company said.
