A trooper pulled over a tractor-trailer at 9:30 a.m. for a routine traffic stop on northbound Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County near the Raphine exit.
After Linc alerted the trooper that drugs were in the truck's trailer, the driver consented to a search, according to Sgt. H.F. Wray. Inside the trailer, police found nine duffel bags containing marijuana behind a shipment of frozen fruit.
The marijuana had been compressed - probably using a trash compactor - and wrapped in several layers of cellophane with fabric softener sheets between each layer.
The use of the dryer sheets was an attempt to throw off drug dogs, but Wray said Linc wasn't fooled.
Ray estimated the marijuana's street value at $2.2 million, or $10 per gram. The truck was on its way from Texas to Pennsylvania or New Jersey, Wray said.
The driver, Samuel Wallace Hurt, 33, of the 2500 block of Marr Street Northwest, Roanoke, and the passenger, Wayne Robert Jackson, 37, of San Juan, Texas, were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and transporting drugs into the state for the purpose of distribution.
Both were being held in the Rockbridge Regional Jail late Tuesday awaiting arraignment this morning.
