RESTAURANTS GET AWARDS FOR HYGIENE

Eight Roanoke restaurants and three homes for senior citizens will get Silver Platter awards from the State Health Department Oct. 16 to recognize their commitment to preventing food-borne disease.

Winners are Red Lobster, The Olive Garden, Chi-Chi's Mexican Restaurant, Roanoke Airport Mariott, Parker's Seafood Restaurant, Morrison's, D.J.'s Brasserie, The Roanoker Restaurant, and Brandon Oaks, The Park-Oak Grove and Raleigh Court Health Care Center.

All have food protection programs designed to spot potential problems and prevent health problems, said Dr. Molly Rutledge, director of the Roanoke City Health Department. She will present the awards at a ceremony in the Roanoke City Council Chamber.

The program aims at having food service staff trained to avoid food preparation and storage conditions that might result in spoilage or the transmission of harmful organisms. Such programs, called Hazard Analysis Control Point programs, were first developed in the 1970s by The Pillsbury Co. for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

"The awards are expected to let the public know about a restaurant's excellence in food protection," Rutledge said in an announcement about the winners.

In addition to the Silver Platter winners, eight other restaurants will get certificates for participating in the program. They are: Awful Arthur's, Hunters Grill, Spinnakers, Shakers, Texas Steak House, Jefferson Club, Kenny Rogers Roasters-Valley View and Kenny Rogers Roasters-Towers.
