The Mental Health Association of the Roanoke Valley will offer four programs Monday through Thursday in honor of Mental Health Awareness Week.
"When Mental Illness Strikes the Minority Family," a free seminar presented by Gloria Manns, a social worker at Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center, will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Center Training Theater. The MHA will hold another free seminar "Adolescent Depression and Suicide," Wednesday, noon-1:15 p.m., at the same location.
Dr. Samuel Risch, professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the Medical University of South Carolina, will be the keynote speaker at a conference on treating suicidal patients Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in Fralin Atrium at Jefferson Center. Registraton for the conference is $30 and includes a continental breakfast and program materials.
Free depression screenings will be held at three locations Thursday: 10 a.m.-noon at the Friendship Manor Hartsook-Tompkins Residents Center, 397 Hershberger Road N.W.; noon-2 p.m. at Hollins College Ballator Gallery, 7916 Williamson Road; and 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Virginia Western Community College's Whitman Auditorium, 3095 Colonial Ave. S.W.

Antique cars needed for festival
The Roanoke Railway Festival and the Roanoke Valley Antique Automobile Club are now accepting entries for the Roanoke Railway Festival Auto Show to be held Oct. 7 at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The show is open to antiques, customs, modifieds, rods, street machines, motorcycles, trucks, farm tractors and vehicles through 1975. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Showtime is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Vehicle entry fees are $8 non-judged and $10 judged before Saturday, Sept. 30; add $2 to each fee after this date and for day of show. Registration forms and $2 pre-registration coupons are available at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

New support group for pain sufferers
The Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley has formed a second Living with Chronic Pain support group.
The daytime group will meet at noon on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The evening group will meet at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
The meetings are held in the offices of the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley, Jefferson Center; 541 Luck Avenue, Suite 314. There is no cost to attend.

PH grad to perform piano concert Oct. 5
Celia Amstutz, daughter of Nadine Amstutz and the Rev. Kenneth D. Amstutz, will perform an organ concert in the Sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m.
Amstutz has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the Alexandria Symphony, George Mason University Chamber Orchestra, the Virginia Pops Orchestra and the 1994 National Orchestra Institute. She has also won numerous competitions such as 1992 Spivey International Performance Competition and the Senior Concerto Competition.
Amstutz is associate conductor and accompanist for the Fairfax Choral Society, and music director and organist at Fairfax United Methodist Church
Amstutz is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School.
Red Cross seeks platelet donors
The Red Cross needs people to donate platelets, the clotting cell in the blood. Platelets are used primarily for cancer patients who have a critical need for platelet transfusions to prevent uncontrolled bleeding. Platelet transfusions give cancer patients time to respond to chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Limited park access at Garst Mill
The Roanoke County Department of Parks and Recreation announced there will be limited access to the basketball and tennis courts, bathrooms and the picnic pavilion at Garst Mill Park as new sewer lines are installed in October and possibly November. The playground will not be affected by the construction. For updates on the project, call 387-6096.
