PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS LISA R. WHARTON, daughter of Charles Preston of Blue Ridge, recently returned from a five-month Antarctic deployment. Wharton joined 250 other sailors for "Operation Deep Freeze," supporting researchers at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. In their spare time, members of Wharton's squadron volunteered at a children's home in Christchurch, New Zealand, distributing clothes, soap, toothbrushes and toys while also raising money for the home.

PVT. AMY M. MILLER, daughter of Terry L. and Brenda F. Miller of Vinton, recently completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT WILLIAM H. O'NEAL, son of Myrna A. and William H. O'Neal Sr. of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. O'Neal is a 1994 graduate of William Fleming High School.

2ND LT. MELVIN T. WOODING, son of Dorothy M. Lattimore of Roanoke, recently graduated from the Basic School at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico. Wooding is a 1994 graduate of James Madison University.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS JONATHAN ROBINSON, son of Rosa L. Robinson of Roanoke, recently was promoted to his present rank while serving aboard the USS Shenandoah,which is based in Norfolk. Robinson is a 1975 graduate of Patrick Henry High School

PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS ROBERT N. WILLIS, son of Ruth Willis of Salem and Bernard Willis, recently returned from a six-month deployment to the eastern Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea aboard the USS Valley Forge to support the United States' war against drugs. Willis is stationed in San Diego, Calif.

ALEXANDER A. RUSHTON, son of Brian N. Rushton of Roanoke, has completed military leadership training at an Army ROTC advanced camp at at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. He is a 1992 graduate of Patrick Henry High School and attends Georgetown University.

DALE M. SMITH JR., son of Dale M. and Annie F. Smith of Salem, recently completed military leadership training at an Army ROTC advanced camp at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. He is a 1985 graduate of Salem High School and attends Christopher Newport University.

CHARLES E. WATERS, son of Douglas C. and Mary L. Waters of Roanoke, recently completed military leadership training at a ROTC advanced camp at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. He is a 1992 graduate of Patrick Henry High School and attends the University of Richmond.

PHILIP S. TOWNSEND, son of Philip A. and Sandy Townsend of Roanoke, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant after completing an Army ROTC advanced camp at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. Townsend is a 1990 graduate of Northside High School and a 1995 graduate of Virginia Military Institute.

MARINE PVT. MARK A. BURNS, son of Frank and Linda Burns of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Parris Island, S.C. Burns is a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School.
