MARTINSVILLE PLANS OPEN PRACTICE

Martinsville Speedway will hold an open practice on Oct. 4 for NASCAR's Late Model Stock Car division in preparation for the Taco Bell 300 on Oct.15.

More than 125 Late Model Stock cars are expected to enter the Taco Bell 300, which has a purse of more than $90,000 and pays $25,000 to the winner.

Martinsville Speedway will open the grandstand for the Oct.4 test session, and the public is invited to attend for free. Competitors will test from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Taco Bell 300 are $15. For information, call the speedway at 540-956-3151. The first 1,000 advance tickets sold will include a limited-edition T-shirt.

In other racing news:

Three divisional titles will be on the line tonight as New River Valley Speedway brings down the curtain on its regular season one week behind schedule.

The Steve Quesenberry Memorial/X-Press Markets 200, postponed last Saturday because of rain, will feature a 100-lap Late Model Stock Car race along with 35 laps for the Limited Sportsman and 25 each for the Mod Mini, Mini and Pure Stock classes. The race is also the make-up for the RGM Erectors/Wicker Basket rain-out in May.

Two track titles have been decided. Jeff Agnew of Floyd clinched his fourth Late Model championship in five seasons. Veteran Hank Turman of Indian Valley has won his first track championship in the Limited Sportsman class.

Still to be decided are the Mod Mini, Mini and Pure Stock titles. Jimmy Hinkley of Christiansburg holds a six-point edge over K. J. Bishop of Riner in the Mod Mini class. Radford's Wayne Moore leads Floyd's Ray Sowers by 22 in the Mini Stock competition. Rookie Randy Taylor of Madison has all but won the Pure Stock crown as he is 48 ahead of Cloverdale's Tony Rogers.

Gates open at 1:30 p.m. with practice at 3:30. Qualifying is at 6 with the first green flag at 8. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

The final event of the season is set for 3 p.m. on Sat., Oct.21, when the New River Valley Chevy Dealers 250-lap LMSC feature takes the green flag. The race, paying $10,000 to the winner, will be televised live on WDBJ 7, Roanoke. Also on the card are 25 laps for the Pure Stocks and 25 for the Legends Cars.
