FLEMING NO MATCH FOR GW-DANVILLE

A WEEK AFTER FALLING to top-ranked E.C. Glass, the Colonels are overwhelmed by a team tied for second in the Group AAA poll.

Before The Associated Press releases its weekly high school polls Tuesday, perhaps the voters should give George Miller a call. After all, if anyone should know who's No.1 in Group AAA it would be the William Fleming coach.

Miller has sent his squad up against the state's top two teams in the rankings on successive Fridays in E.C. Glass and George Washington-Danville and he doesn't see much difference.

``One is just as tough as the other,'' Miller said after watching GW-Danville hand his Colonels a 59-0 pounding at Victory Stadium. ``GW is probably a quicker team, but Glass has more power.''

The Eagles (5-0) definitely were quicker than Fleming on Friday night, racing to a 23-0 lead in the first quarter behind a stingy defense that kept the Colonels (2-3) pinned deep in their own territory throughout the game.

Fleming was held to 124 yards of total offense, with much of that coming in the fourth quarter. The Colonels didn't cross midfield until midway through the final period, when their only serious scoring threat ended at GW's 23-yard line when Lee Suggs was stopped on fourth down.

The Eagles, on the other hand, scored on all but two of their nine possessions as they shut out Fleming for the fourth consecutive year. Tailback Keith Terry scored three touchdowns and rushed for 150 yards while pushing his season total to more than 1,000 yards.

``We were more polished offensively than we were last week against Patrick Henry,'' said Everett Woods, who is handling the coaching duties at GW while Ed Martin recuperates from open-heart surgery. ``We didn't force anything tonight.''

GW increased its lead to 38-0 in the second quarter, thanks to Chanston Rodgers' 21-yard interception return and Dickerson's 1-yard touchdown. The rout continued into the fourth quarter as Terry scored on runs of 1 and 22 yards.

Fleming may have taken its second thumping in as many weeks (the Colonels lost 42-12 to Glass), but Miller said he isn't discouraged.

``We will continue to come to play,'' he said. ``We will not hide from anyone. I know our day is coming.''
