WVTF sponsors political debates

BLACKSBURG - WVTF Public Radio is sponsoring two political debates between local state Senate and House of Delegate candidates. The debate between Republican Pat Cupp and Democratic incumbent, Madison Marye, candidates for the 39th Senatorial District broadcast by the public radio station on Oct. 10, will be held in the auditorium of the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center. The first debate, on Sept. 27, was between Republican Larry Linkous and Democratic incumbent, Jim Shuler. The debate is free and open to the public. Theatre of the Deaf performs at Radford

RADFORD - The National Theatre of the Deaf, a professional ensemble of deaf and hearing actors, will perform their rendition of the classic French farce, "An Italian Straw Hat" at Radford University's Preston Auditorium, Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Montgomery landfill to close on Sundays

CHRISTIANSBURG - Beginning Sunday the Montgomery County Solid Waste Authority will close its landfill on Sundays. Members of the community are asked to call the Department of Public Facilities, 382-5796, for more information on refuse collection.

Tom's Creek Basin zoning proposals

BLACKSBURG - Proposed zoning district regulations for the Tom's Creek Basin will be presented and opened for public comment at a community involvement meeting on Thursday from 7:30-9:30 p.m., at the Blacksburg Community Center, Patrick Henry Drive. Giles candidates to appear at forum

NEWPORT - The Newport Village Council is sponsoring two forums for voters to hear Giles candidates on the Nov. 7 ballot. The first forum is Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., for candidates for the offices of treasurer, commissioner of the revenue and School Board. The second forum is Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m., for candidates for the offices of Board of Supervisors, sheriff and commonwealth's attorney. Forums are at Newport School Auditorium.

Classes available in interior design

DUBLIN - Home interior design classes will be offered at New River Community College starting Wednesday. The classes will be during the evening and will be at the Dublin campus.

Students will learn basic techniques in colors, patterns and layouts for new or old houses. Highlights will include kitchen and bath lighting and colors, proper furniture layout and window treatment. In addition, students will visit a local shop for hands-on decorating tips and practice. Designer Judy Harris will teach the class.

The noncredit course consists of four sessions, which will meet Tuesdays, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Godbey Hall, room 165. The course costs $32 plus $10 for materials.

Mining documentary to air on WTOB

BLACKSBURG - A documentary tracing the coal industry and the lives of the miners in Montgomery County will be featured on WTOB - Channel 2 Wednesday at 7 p.m. "Hard Times, Rich memories: The Coal Miners of Montgomery County," is locally produced by Shawna Gray.

At 8:30 p.m., a live music performance by the Yams from Outer Space will be featured.

On Thursday, at 8 p.m. it's the Sports Authority, the sports talk show featuring highlights and results from various Virginia Tech sports with interviews from the coaches and players.

Volunteers needed for walking club

CHRISTIANSBURG - Two area organizations are co-sponsoring a walking club. The New River Valley Agency for the Mentally Retarded Inc., Leisure Directions, a United Way partner agency, and Area 9 Special Olympics will pair people with and without mental disabilities to walk for exercise and socialization.

Volunteer orientation will be Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. inside University Mall in Blacksburg.

The dates of the walking club are Tuesdays, Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in University Mall.

Limited transportation will be provided for individuals with mental disabilities. Volunteers are needed. For information, call Sheila Roop at 381-0310.

Beyer will appear at Democratic dinner

CHRISTIANSBURG - Lt. Gov. Don Beyer will be among the guests at a Montgomery County Democratic Party dinner Oct. 7 at the Farmhouse.

Local candidates will also be there, including state Sen. Madison Marye; county Commonwealth's Attorney Phillip Keith; Nancy Miller, candidate for county commissioner of revenue; sheriff's candidate Jerry Olinger; and four candidates for the county Board of Supervisors: Mary Biggs, and Bob Goncz, and current supervisors Joe Gorman, and Ira Long.
