PULASKI CO. TAKES ADVANTAGE OF HERITAGE MISCUES FOR WIN

Pulaski County scored 17 points off three Heritage turnovers en route to a 23-6 non-district high school football victory Friday.

``That's what you're supposed to do with the football after the other team turns it over,'' Pulaski coach Joel Hicks said. ``You take the ball down the field and score with it.''

Pulaski County (2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory. Heritage dropped to 3-2.

The Pioneers haven't defeated the Cougars since the inaugural game of the series in 1990.

Both teams got off to rocky starts Friday, turning the ball over twice each on fumbles.

But it was the Pioneers who were most hurt by their miscues.

The Cougars scored first on a 39-yard field goal from Shayne Graham with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter.

Graham's field goal was set up when Heritage fullback Dewayne Banks fumbled a first-down pitch from quarterback Andre Hunt on the Pioneers' 20-yard line.

The Cougars struck again with 9:34 remaining in the second quarter when linebacker Page Hill scooped up a fumble from Hunt and outran the Pioneers 95 yards for the score, giving Pulaski County a 10-0 advantage.

``Hill's return was the longest we've had since I've been here,'' Hicks said. ``When he got to the 15-yard line I didn't know if he was going to make it.''

The Cougars stretched their lead to 17-0 on a 5-yard touchdown run by tailback Derrick Hunter.

The touchdown was set up after Heritage fumbled a fake punt attempt.

Hunter led Pulaski County's ground attack with 91 yards on 16 carries. Jawan Clark added to the effort, running for 65 yards.

``We got good balance out of our backfield tonight,'' Hicks said. ``Both Hunter and Clark did a good job.''

Heritage finally broke through the stingy Cougar defense in the third quarter when tailback Tremayne Sanders scored on a 3-yard run. The two-point conversion failed, and Heritage trailed 17-6.

That was as close as Heritage would get as Graham tacked on two more field goals from 37 and 23 yards.

``This was a good win for us,'' Hicks said. ``We're a long way away from being a state champion, but we are still competing for a district title, and we need wins like this.''
