BOTETOURT KNOCKS OFF ROCKBRIDGE

Two fumbles by Rockbridge County, the state's fourth-ranked Group AA team, opened the door for Lord Botetourt to stun the Wildcats 27-21 on Friday night in a Blue Ridge District game in Lexington.

Lord Botetourt took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on two Wesley Cox touchdown runs.

The first costly fumble came at the Rockbridge County 15-yard line on a punt by the Cavaliers, and Lord Botetourt capitalized with a touchdown to make the score 20-7.

After the Wildcats closed to 20-13, Botetourt returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.

Rockbridge County (4-1 overall, 0-1 district) drove to the Cavaliers' 30 on its final possession before fumbling to end the threat.

Cox led Lord Botetourt (1-3, 1-0) with 116 yards on 23 carries.

Jimmy Emore powered the Wildcats' offense with 120 yards on 17 carries.

Salem 54, Alleghany 13: The Spartans built a 33-0 lead through one quarter and cruised past the Mountaineers for a Blue Ridge District victory in Low Moor.

Chris Huff scored a pair of touchdowns and Gussie Vaughan rushed for 86 yards and a score as the Spartans (4-0) amassed 342 yards of offense.

Alleghany (0-5) was plagued by a pair of turnovers in the first quarter, both of which led to Salem touchdowns. One was a fumble that Rusty Howell returned 36 yards for the first points of the game. Howell also scored on a 3-yard run for the Spartans.

Oliver Jordan and Bernie Cooper had touchdowns for Alleghany, Cooper on a 55-yard run.

Patrick Henry 36, Halifax County 14: Raheem Barnwell's 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 8:10 remaining sparked the Patriots to a non-district victory over the Comets in a Group AAA game in South Boston.

Halifax County (3-2) had closed to 21-14 on John Pointer's 63-yard scoring pass from Levar Medley before Barnwell's return ended the Comets' comeback bid.

The Patriots (2-2) got their final touchdown on a 23-yard run by James Hickenbotham with 43 seconds remaining, capping a 66-yard drive. Hickenbotham also had a 53-yard touchdown run in the second period.

Halifax County was hampered by eight penalties for 101 yards. PH was penalized once for 15.

Roanoke Catholic 42, Fishburne Military 0: P.J. Moyer accumulated 211 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns as the Celtics blitzed Fishburne Military Academy in a Virginia Independent Conference game in Waynesboro.

Moyer had 142 yards rushing, including a 65-yard scoring jaunt, returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown and passed for 9 yards to lead Catholic's offensive assault.

Alex Dickson scored on an 80-yard kickoff return and Mark Buchy had a 35-yard touchdown run for Roanoke Catholic (4-1, 1-0).

Fishburne is 0-3 overall and in the conference.

Hargrave Military 34, North Cross 0: Carlos Pearson scored four touchdowns and finished with 113 yards on nine carries as the Tigers shut out the Raiders in a Virginia Independent Conference game in Chatham.

Rob Lindsey completed both of his passes for touchdowns and finished with 128 yards in the air as Hargrave improved its record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the VIC.

Junior Carter Lee led the Raiders (0-4, 0-1) on offense with 165 yards on 46 carries.

E.C. Glass 54, Franklin County 10: The Hilltoppers rolled up 392 yards rushing to overwhelm the Eagles in a Group AAA non-district game.

Chris Mathews rushed for 193 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries, and quarterback Andre Kendrick rolled for 132 yards rushing on seven carries with a pair of touchdowns for Glass (4-0).

Franklin County (1-4) made a game of it for a half, trailing 21-10 at intermission after Gray Hodges hooked up with Brandon Smith on a 9-yard touchdown pass.

Bath County 19, Covington 0: Ivan Franklin rushed for 108 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Chargers, the fifth-ranked team in Group A, rolled to a Pioneer District victory over the Cougars in Hot Springs.

Jamie Carroll carried for 184 yards to spark Bath County (4-0, 2-0), and the Chargers finished with 304 yards of total offense - all on the ground. Bath limited Covington (2-3, 0-1) to 92 yards of total offense.

Franklin scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter to make it 6-0 and added the Chargers' final touchdown with a 9-yard run in the fourth period. Carroll scored on a 4-yard run in the final quarter.
