WILSON QUITS GOP PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Out of money and trailing badly - even in his home state - California Gov. Pete Wilson abandoned his bid for the Republican presidential nomination Friday, saying he could not in good conscience pile up a hugh debt.

"As much as your hearts and mine tell me to fight on, my conscience tells me that to do so would be unfair to all of us," Wilson said at a Sacramento rally. "To go on would simply be to run up an unacceptable debt."
