THOMAS' WIN AT NRVS A 10

Ronnie Thomas won his 10th Late Model Stock race of the season at New River Valley Speedway on Saturday night, taking the checkered flag in the Steve Quesenberry Memorial/Express Markets 200.

Thomas dominated the field, leading 94 of 105 laps. The Christiansburg driver took a lead he never would relinquish on lap 11, passing Roanoke's Tony McGuire in turn 3.

``Tony slipped a little bit in the turn and I knew that I had to pass him then,'' Thomas said.

``The car has been set up for hot weather, and it hasn't run well the last couple of weeks,'' he said. ``We made a few changes this week and it ran pretty good.''

Floyd's Jeff Agnew, the 1995 Late Model points champion, finished second in the caution-marred race. Rodney Cundiff of Boones Mill placed third.

Despite Thomas' domination, the race wasn't without controversy.

McGuire, who was running in third place at the time, was placed at the back of the field for his involvement in a wreck that put Tink Reedy of Roanoke into the wall in the second turn on lap 92.

Reedy, who was running second at the time, finished 10th. The incident on the track spilled over to the pits as members of both crews had to be restrained by track officials.

Ray Young of Bassett was disqualified for violating tread-width regulations, nullifying his third-place finish.

In other action, pole-sitter K.J. Bishop of Riner led eight of 25 laps on his way to winning the Modified Mini race.

Bishop overtook Charlie Smith of Dublin on lap 18 and held off the field, winning his second race of the season.

Smith finished second after leading the first 17 laps of the race. Christiansburg's Jimmy Hinkley placed third.

Hinkley's third-place showing was good enough to wrap up the NRVS season championship in the Modified Mini division by two points over Bishop.

In the 35-lap Limited Sportsman race, track champion and pole-winner Hank Turman of Indian Valley led flag to flag, earning his fifth victory of the season.

Turman held off hard-charging Tam Topham of Wytheville at the finish. Topham's last-ditch pass attempt to the inside of Turman was denied in the fourth turn.

Salem's Jay McCray finished third, moving up two spots from his fifth-place qualifying effort.

Radford native Wayne Moore continued his domination of the Mini Stock class, passing leader Robert Cox of Roanoke on the next-to-last lap of the race.

The victory was Moore's 13th of the season. Cox finished second and Kevin Kenley of Radford was third in the 28-lap affair.

Grump Wills of Bozoo, W.Va., won for the fourth time this season in the Pure Stock division. Wills passed Tommy Allie on lap 20 and held on to win the 26-lap race.

Randy Taylor of Madison finished second when Allie was penalized on a caution restart on lap 25. Pembroke's Barry Williams completed the top three.
