Brown has received $0 in contributions and spent $0 in his campaign for the Catawba District seat on the Roanoke County School Board.
He has done personal campaigning and appeared at candidates' forums. But he has not printed any brochures or posters, bought any ads or handed out pencils as candidates typically do.
Brown has run the cheapest campaign among the School Board candidates in Roanoke County in the Nov. 7 election. But the other hopefuls are running low-budget races, too.
William Irvin III has spent $14.60 in his campaign for the Cave Spring District seat. He bought a candidate's campaign package from the Virginia School Boards Association for $10 and paid county schools $4.60 for statistical information.
Irvin has received $100 in contributions. But his campaign bank account will get a big boost soon: The Political Action Committee of the Roanoke County Education Association endorsed him last week and will donate $500 to his campaign.
Vern Jordahl has spent $40 for photos and fliers in his race for the Cave Spring District seat. He has not received any contributions.
Carol White, the third Cave Spring candidate, has reported expenditures of $189 and contributions of $175. Most of her money was spent for a $150 ad in a Cave Spring High boosters program. She also bought a candidates' package from the Virginia School Boards Association.
In the Catawba contest, John Reed has received $60 in contributions and spent $199. His expenditures include $130 for posters and $62 for copying.
Marion Roark, the third Catawba candidate, has received the most contributions and spent the most. Her donations total $689, including $500 from the teachers' Political Action Committee.
Roark has spent $208 on stationery, postage, food and other items.
At this point in the campaign, spending is lower than a year ago, when three board members were elected. Expenditures by the candidates in that race ranged up to $2,895.
Because political parties are barred from nominating school board candidates, there are no existing political organizations to help them raise campaign funds.
All of the candidates in the county's School Board election are running for elected office for the first time - and most said they are reluctant to seek contributions for fear that it could compromise their independence.
