RADFORD GETS WIN NO. 11

Bobby Radford won his single-season record 11th race Saturday and in the process clinched the 1995 track championship at the Franklin County Speedway with a 50-lap feature victory.

The season championship was the second of the Ferrum driver's career, with the first coming in 1983.

Radford could see the second title coming. Last week at the speedway, he passed out ink pens emblazoned with a logo promoting his championship. He had ordered them in April.

Radford, who started from the pole, saw his only challenge come from Henry's Todd Philpott, the eventual second-place finisher. The race ran smoothly except for one caution flag on lap 41 when Orville Reedy and Dudley Lawhorn tangled.

Rounding out the feature's top five were Lowe Smith, Steve Lynch and Lawhorn.

Fifteen-year-old Travis Sharp, who just got his learner's permit this week, showed the Mini Stock lineup he already knows a little about driving by capturing his fourth win of the year. Chris Martin, Gary Clifton, James Cox and Lewis Wagner rounded out the top five.

Mike Elkins tacked up his 15th win of the season with a Street Stock victory. Mike Dudley came in second, followed by David Smith, Freddie Goff and Wayne Corprew.

Kelly Kingery came to the speedway riding a five-race win streak in the Pure Stock division, but a disqualification for having wedges in his springs kept him from earning No.6. Jay Perry was the winner as Tom Dooley, Kevin Ransom, Neil Murray and Larry Gilley closed out the top five.

Bobby Davis took the rookie race, trailed by Mark Stoner, Scott Spradlin, Scott Foley and Harland Dalton. Jeff Murphy won the V.I.A.D.A. race while Jimmy Floyd took the any car race after Frank Kelly was disqualified for cutting away body parts.

Mike Fisher scored two goals and assisted on one as top-ranked Virginia dominated North Carolina State 4-0 in an ACC men's soccer game in Raleigh, N.C.

Ben Olsen and Tim Prisco each added a goal and an assist for the Cavaliers (8-0-1 overall, 3-0-1 ACC), who are unbeaten in their past 18 games. N.C. State is 2-5-1, 0-3.

Kelly Riescher scored her second goal of the game with four minutes left in the second overtime to give Radford a 3-2 victory over Louisville in a non-conference women's soccer contest in Radford.

Louisville's Stephanie Contole and Riescher scored in regulation time. Kristi MacBrair scored to give the Cardinals (4-5) the lead in the second overtime, and Stephanie Boyle tied it about a minute later for the Highlanders (3-5-1).

Meredith Arnott scored a pair of goals to power Roanoke College to a 3-0 victory over visiting Hollins in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer game in Salem. Lisa Franzino had the third goal for the Maroons.

Virginia Tech and Davidson combined for 36 shots, but neither women's soccer team could score in Blacksburg. Hope Handley made 10 saves en route to her third shutout of the season for the Hokies (2-6-2).

Virginia Tech's Andrew Krafft and Chad Toleafoa reached the final in the A Division doubles, but dropped an 8-5 decision to Tony Thomas and Tripp Phillips of North Carolina at the Tar Heel Invitational men's tennis tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C. Krafft bounced back to win the A Division consolation singles final over James Madison's Colin Dewindt 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

At Potts Mountain, Ed Dickinson of Roanoke finished third in the pro/expert category of the final race of the All-Sport/East Coasters Virginia Championship Mountain Bike Series.

Brian Bond of Blacksburg finished fifth in the sport men division and second overall in the series. Chris Scott won the Virginia Championship.
