AUTHOR TO DISCUSS MENTAL ILLNESS

Lori Schiller, author of ``The Quiet Room: A Journey Out of the Torment of Madness,'' will talk in Salem and Roanoke this week about her fight against mental illness.

Schiller's presentation, ``A Family's Struggle to Conquer Mental Illness,'' chronicles her 13-year battle with schizophrenia and how she was able to rejoin the ``real world.''

She is stabilized on the new drug Clozapine (Clozaril) and is able to live independently and work. As spokeswoman for the Mental Illness Foundation, she travels throughout the country speaking about her illness, medications and treatments.

Schiller will speak tonight at 7:30 in the Salem Civic Center community room. Seating is limited, and people should call 977-3470 to reserve seats. Admission is free.

She also will speak on Wednesday and Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, 2015 Grandin Road S.W.

The programs are sponsored by The Alliance for the Mentally Ill-Roanoke Valley in honor of Mental Illness Awareness Week.
