WERTZ, Herman E., 82, of Roanoke, died Sunday, October 1, 1995. Mr. Wertz was the widower of Mary Ward Wertz. He was the president of Riley Trucking Co., and was a member of Virginia Heights Lodge No. 324 AF&AM and Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Wertz is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Richard W. and Jeanie U. Wertz, Warren E. and Phyllis M. Wertz, Roanoke, David L. and Ann B. Wertz, Moneta; granddaughters, Jessica L. Wertz, Richmond, Paige M. Wertz, Flagstaff, Ariz., Lisa R. Wertz and Wendy L. Wertz, Moneta; brother and sisters-in-law, Glenn R. and Melva F. Wertz, Callaway, Willie S. Hockett, Roanoke, Christine Wertz, Roanoke, Fern Wertz, Salem, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, 1995, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with burial to follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Frie nds may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

AUSTIN, James Doyle, (``J. D.""), 78, of Roanoke, our precious husband, daddy, granddaddy and great-granddaddy, went to be with the Lord Sunday, October 1, 1995, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was a member and deacon of Waverly Place Baptist Church, and retired from Appalachian Power Co. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Helen Byrd Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, D. Wayne and Nancy Austin, Atlanta, Ga., Roger and Belinda Austin, Roanoke; grandchildren, Melissa Wade and husband Timmy, R. Neil Austin and wife Stephanie; great-grandsons, Roger Neil Austin III, Timothy Tyler Wade; his mother, Era Austin, Roanoke; brothers and sisters -in-law, Grover and Evelyn Austin, Roanoke, O. C. and Mary Austin, Orange Park, Fla.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Iris and Forrest Lloyd, Vinton, Lucille and Jack Minter, Roanoke; Chester T. Lyle, who has been like a son for many years, and a host of friends, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 3825 Electric Rd., Roanoke, Va. 24018. Funeral services will conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel by the Rev. Charles Hoffler, the Rev. Jim Brackett and Dr. Steve Spangler. AUSTIN, Margie Vest, 93, of Check, died Sunday, October 1, 1995, in Radford Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Austin, and a son Hanford H. Austin. She is survived by a daughter, Beulah W. Vest and husband Sonny, Floyd; three sons, William Versel Austin and wife, Glenna, Christiansburg, Arnold Mose Austin and wife Madie, Pilot, the Rev. Dr. Fred L. Austin and wife Vivian, Wytheville; nine grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, 1995, at the Little White Church, Terry's Fork, with Dr. Fred L. Austin and the Rev. Layne Board officiating. Interment will be in the Wilson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd.

BRANSCOME, Hattie Semones, 83, of Hillsville, passed away Saturday, September 30, 1995, at her residence. Mrs. Branscome was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Branscome. She is survived by a stepson and daughter-in-law, Donald and Ellen Branscome, Max Meadows; three sisters and their spouses, Sadie and Swanson Bowman, Roanoke, Lora Davenport, Mt. Airy, N.C., Goldie and Ivan Utt, Mt. Airy, N.C.; a special sister-in-law, Ruth Semones, Hillsville; four stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, October 2, 1995, in the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, with Elder Charles Goins officiating. Interment will be in Webb-Skyview Cemetery. CREASY, Hughey Vernon Jr., 83, of 5301 Fort Avenue, Apt. 19, Lynchburg and Smith Mountain Lake, died Sunday, October 1, 1995 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born March 27, 1912 in Lynchburg, son of the late Hughey Vernon Creasy Sr. and Bessie Lee Creasy Noel. He was a member of College Hill Baptist Church and was a retired Deputy Sheriff for the City of Lynchburg. He is survived by his wife, Erna Tuck Creasy; his daughter, Constance Owen Stephens and her husband, Robert B., of Smith Mountain Lake; four grandchildren, Elizabeth S. Burns, Dallas, Texas, Robert B. Stephens, Huntsville, Ala., Jennifer S. Johnson, Jackson, Miss., and David M. Stephens, of Huntsville, Ala.; also six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Fort Hill Memorial Park, Tuesday, October 3,1995, at 11 a.m. with Dr. David F. Upshaw officiating. LACKS, Ardell Virginia, 78, of Rocky Mount, died Saturday, September 30, 1995, at Eldercare of Franklin County. Born on October 22, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Mauda Stimage Gregory. Surviving are her husband, Clyde Lacks of Eldercare of Franklin County; a son and daughter-in-law, Sherman and Peggy Lacks, Rocky Mount, and several nieces and nephews. LOGAN, Sylvia C., 89, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, September 30,1995. LORITTS, Howard Taft, 86, retired funeral director, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away Friday, September 29, 1995, in Roanoke. The son of the late Milton and Anna Loritts, he is survived by three sisters, Alberta Burney and Vera Loritts, Philadelphia, Pa., Inerbelle Loritts, New York, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Loritts, Roanoke, Annie Loritts, Lincolnton, N.C., Adeline Loritts, Conover, N.C.; devoted nephew, Alfred (Rebecca) Loritts, Roanoke; devoted niece, Elaina Loritts-Duckett (Harold), Roanoke; devoted neighbors, Viola and Curtis Lloyd, Dayton, Ohio, and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. MARSH, Daisy Beatrice, 93, of Salem, died Sunday, October 1, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allie Morris Marsh Sr., her son, George William Marsh, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. survivors include her children, Bertha G. Wood, Cecila Beatrice Nunn, Betty Randall, Allie Marsh Jr., Rosetta Kirkman and James E. Marsh; 26 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 4, 1995 by Chaplain Bruce Robinson in the John M. Oakey & Son Salem Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Butts Cemetery. MORAN, Elmer Lee Jr., 73, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, October 1, 1995. He was born March 1, 1922, the son of the late Elmer L. and Minnie H. Moran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy D. Moran, and a son, David Lee Moran. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Sheryl Moran, Winchester, Matthew and Sandra Moran, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Carlton Booth, Rocky Mount; seven grandchildren, Dawn Wilham, Robin Yount, Travis Booth, Chris Rose, Stephanie Moran, Dustin Moran, and Brittany Moran; four great-grandchildren. Mr. Moran was a U. S. Army and Air Force veteran, serving in World War II, Company A, 1st Battalion, 38th Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, with battle campaigns in Normandy, Nor thern France, and Germany. He received the American Defense Service Medal, the European African Middle East Theatre Campaign Ribbon with three Bronze Stars. Mr. Moran was retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, 1995, in Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Frank Feather officiating. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel after 10 a.m. Tuesday, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m.
