Tech candidate forum

Candidates in the New River Valley's two contested General Assembly races will speak and take questions tonight before the Virginia Tech Faculty Senate. The 7:30 p.m. candidates' forum will be held at Tech's Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center auditorium and will be open to the public.

Del. Jim Shuler, D-Blacksburg, and Republican challenger Larry Linkous, and state Sen. Madison Marye, D-Shawsville, and GOP challenger Pat Cupp, will focus on issues related to higher education.

The Donaldson Brown center is located on Otey Street in Blacksburg, on Tech's campus.

Lowering water level

PULASKI - Appalachian Power Co. will lower the water level in Claytor Lake five feet Wednesday, Nov. 1, through Saturday, Nov. 4, to allow shoreline property owners to clean up debris and make repairs on docks and retaining walls. The water will be held at this level until Sunday evening, Nov. 19. The drawdown is coordinated with Claytor Lake State Park, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and Pulaski County.

"The summer boating and recreational season is over and this drawdown period is an excellent time to clean up the entire shoreline," said Mike Spraker, president of Friends of Claytor Lake. "We will join Appalachian in promoting the voluntary cleanup effort by urging residents, homeowner associations and others to take advantage of this opportunity by organizing cleanup activities at various locations on the lake."

Boaters and lake users should be cautious during the drawdown because submerged features will be closer to the surface. Boaters should reduce speed near shore. For more information, call Mike Thacker, Apco's reservoir superintendent at 985-2300.
