About 8:40, Elmer E. Amos was traveling north in the 1700 block of 10th Street when a car traveling south veered into his lane. Amos was pronounced dead at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, according to Roanoke police.
The driver of the other car, Harry E. Cunningham, 34, was conscious at the scene and talking with police. He was in satisfactory condition Monday night, according to a nursing supervisor at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Police continue to investigate the accident. Amos and Cunningham were not wearing seat belts.
This is the first traffic fatality in Roanoke since Nov. 8, 1994.
