JUSTICES REFUSE TO HEAR 5 DEATH ROW APPEALS

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused, without comment, to hear the appeals of five Virginia death row inmates, including a man who shot a state trooper.

Lonnie Weeks was convicted of the Feb. 23, 1993, capital murder of State Trooper Jose M. Cavazos in Prince William County. Cavazos was shot after stopping a speeding car on Interstate 95 at Dale City.

The court also rejected the appeal of Tommy David Strickler, who was convicted of murdering Leanne Whitlock, a James Madison University student from Roanoke, after abducting her from a Harrisonburg shopping mall in 1990.

The others whose appeals were rejected, and the jurisdictions in which they were convicted of capital murder, were Kenneth L. Wilson, Newport News; Jason M. Joseph, Portsmouth; and Lance Antonio Chandler, Halifax County.
