David Matthews, 32, of Broad Run was charged with capital murder last week in the Sept. 25 death of Alesha Jones, a distant relative who lived in Midland.
A handgun was found in Matthews' car last week, Sheriff Joe Higgs said. Police are examining the gun to determine if the bullet that killed Alesha matches the weapon.
Alesha's body was found Sept. 26 near her home. Higgs said last week that the slaying is being investigated as a sexual assault.
Juvenile and Domestic Court Judge Dudley Payne set a tentative court date Monday of Nov. 13 for Matthews' preliminary hearing.
Matthews is being held in the county jail without bond.
