FOUR PLAYERS ABSENT FROM EXPRESS

The Roanoke Express trimmed its roster to 25 when four players did not report to Monday's opening day of training camp in Hillsborough, N.C.

The most significant no-show was right wing Louis-Phillipe Charbonneau, who is in camp with the Cornwall Aces of the American Hockey League. Express general manager Pierre Paiement said Charbonneau will probably sign with Cornwall.

Three other players - forwards Chris Hills and Roxy Vellieux, and defenseman Jude Boulianne - did not report to camp.

East Coast Hockey League rules allow teams to carry up to 20 players, 17 of whom can dress for games.

The Express will hold intra-squad scrimmages today at 6 p.m. and on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Hillsborough. The scrimmages are open to the public. Admission will be charged.

The Express opens the exhibition season Friday at Norfolk against the Hampton Roads Admirals.

ETC. Arena in line for Olympic post

Bruce Arena, who has directed Virginia to four consecutive NCAA men's soccer championship, is a candidate for the post of United States Olympic coach.

The post has been vacant since last week, when Timo Liekoski was relieved of his duties.

``I'd be interested in the position,'' Arena, who would not confirm or deny that he had been to Los Angeles to meet with U.S. soccer officials, said.

Arena, whose Cavaliers (8-0-1) are ranked No.1 in Division I, technically could leave UVa at the end of the season and return in time to coach the Cavaliers next year.

``It's [the Olympic post] not a full-time job,'' said Arena, who would have a chance to coach several of his former players, ``but it's more complicated than it sounds.''

Athletic director Terry Holland indicated that some of the people responsible for selecting a new Olympic coach are also involved with the new professional soccer league that is trying to lure Arena.

``I hope it all works out,'' said Holland, apparently agreeable to an arrangement that would allow Arena to coach the Olympians during his offseason. ``That would be great for us.''

Virginia Tech's Jim Druckenmiller and Bryan Still, who collaborated on an 85-yard pass play in the Hokies' 26-16 win at Pitt on Saturday, were named the winners of the AT&T Long Distance pass play award Monday.

The weekly award goes to the two Division I-A players responsible for the longest pass play from the previous week's games.

AT&T donated $400 to the NCAA's Degree-Completion award program in the Tech players' names. Druckenmiller and Still will each receive an engraved plaque in recognition of their achievements.

Pros J.J. Hardwick of Virginia Tech, Don Sweeting of Pinehurst and Chip Sullivan of Hanging Rock in Salem all produced 4-under par 68s in Hot Springs to share the individual lead of the Bobby Jones Pro-Am.

They led after the first day of the two-day, 36-hole event, which was played over The Homestead's par-72 Lower Cascades course. Play shifts today to the resort's Cascades course.

Posting the lowest team score Monday was a Staunton foursome of pro David Gooden and three amateurs, Jerry Bartley, Jim Ellis and Tim Floyd. They combined for a 23-under par score of 121.

In second place with 123 were pro Don Ryder of Hot Springs and his amateur threesome of Jim McDonogh, Greg Gibson and Basil Fry, also from the Bath County area.

Simon Cooke tied for fifth place in the University of Tennessee Tournament of Champions to lead Virginia to a third-place finish in the 15-team competition at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. Cooke shot a 70 for a three-day total of 210.

East Tennessee's Garrett Willis shot an 11-under-par 205 to win the individual competition and help the Buccaneers capture the team title. East Tennessee finished at 857, followed by Louisiana State at 859 and Virginia at 866.

R.J. Weaver shot a 1-over-par 71 to lead Ferrum to a fourth-place finish in the first day of the Tom O'Bryant Memorial Golf Tournament in Greensboro.

The Panthers finished at 310 on the par-70 Cardinal Golf Course. Elon had a 285 to lead the field.

The two-day tournament concludes today. (Complete scores in Scoreboard. B4)

As many as 24 men's and women's club and collegiate teams are expected to participate.
