The quilt show, sponsored by The Floyd County Woman's Club, will be held in the gymnasium of Floyd Elementary School adjacent to the high school grounds. The Floyd show is one of the most prestigious shows in Southwest Virginia; 110 entries were judged last year from Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.
This year's show will feature regional artists' original designs, traditional and contemporary, in quilts, wall-hangings, miniatures and "wearable art."
Ribbons, which are hand-quilted works of art made by members of The Old Church Gallery Quilter's Guild, are awarded in each category. Local businesses have donated money and gift certificates for the winners as well. Some of the quilting entries will be for sale by the owners. Antique quilts, not for sale, will be on display.
If quilts aren't you're thing there will be other crafts to choose from - wood working, jewelry, appliqued clothing, ceramics, afghans, dolls, dried and silk flower wreaths and arrangements, hand-woven baskets, painted pumpkins and much more. More than 225 artisans and craftspeople will be selling their handmade wares at the two-day festival.
An added attraction this year is "Featured Quilter," Effie Brown, a Floyd County quilter of renown, noted for her meticulous attention to detail, flawless stitches and interesting stories about the names of quilt patterns. Another feature, popular every year, is the "Viewer's Choice Award," which allows visitors to vote on their favorite quilts.
For the first time in several years, a Fine Arts display will be part of the festival. A group of local artists has agreed to assemble an art show and sale in the Band Building on the school grounds.
Lt. Gov. Don Beyer has announced he will stop by the festival from 5 to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Floyd County Rescue Squad and its auxiliary will provide food concessions throughout the weekend. There is no charge for admission or parking.
The festival begins Saturday at 10 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Activities on Sunday are from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. For more information call 789-7486 or 745-4804.
