Manti Venable put the Bulldogs (4-1 overall, 4-0 district) on the scoreboard early, cruising into the end zone from 33 yards in the first quarter. In the third period, he scampered in from the Laurel Park 32 for his second and final touchdown of the night. He had an interception return for an apparent score, but it was called back because of a clipping penalty. Venable finished the night with 153 yards rushing and two interceptions.
Leander Preston almost mirrored Venable's performance, scoring twice - once on the ground and once in the air - and picking off a pass. Preston trotted in from the 8-yard line in the second quarter and caught an 11-yard scoring pass from Roger Martin in the same period.
Second-string quarterback Jess Wade produced the longest scoring play of the night for the Bulldogs, connecting with David Walker on a 70-yard pass in the fourth quarter.
Laurel Park's record slipped to 1-4, 1-3.
Blacksburg 17, Northside 13: In Blacksburg, the Indians scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to break open a defensive struggle and earn a non-district victory over the Vikings.
First, Tucker LaForce scored on a run from the 6 with 11:31 left. After Blacksburg recovered a fumble on the Northside 30, Tommy LaForce ran in from the 4 as the Indians made it 17-7.
The Vikings (1-4), who scored on two touchdown passes, grabbed the lead in the first half when Mike Dillon hit Mike Bullock with a 25-yard scoring strike. Dillon also hit Jonathan Underwood for 15 yards and a touchdown as the game ended.
For the night, Dillon completed six of 13 passes for 98 yards.
Blacksburg, which had 100 yards rushing as a team, was paced by Tucker LaForce with 73 yards on 19 attempts.
Stuarts Draft 7, Parry McCluer 6: In Buena Vista, the Cougars (5-0), ranked fourth in the state Group A poll, scored on the first play of the fourth quarter and held on for a victory over the Fighting Blues (3-2) in a non-district battle.
Neither offense could get the ball moving in the turnover-marred game. Stuarts Draft coughed up the ball four times, and Parry McCluer had three miscues.
Dave Branch punched the ball into the end zone from the 3-yard line four seconds into the final quarter, and the extra-point kick was the difference.
D.J. Douglas scored on a 22-yard scamper in the second quarter for Parry McCluer (3-2). He finished with 57 yards rushing.
Bath County 29, Glenvar 0: Jamie Carroll had 18 carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns as the Chargers swamped the Highlanders in a Pioneer District game in Hot Springs. It was Bath County's third shutout in five games.
The Chargers (5-0, 3-0), the seventh-ranked team in the state Group A poll, took a 14-0 second-quarter lead and never looked back.
Bath County held Glenvar (2-3, 0-2) to 106 yards total offense and never allowed the Highlanders closer than the Chargers' 25-yard line.
Grayson County 42, Galax 7: Jason Montgomery rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns as the Blue Devils routed the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game in Independence.
Galax (0-6, 0-3) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Harley Phillips ran 65 yards for a touchdown. Grayson County responded quickly with two touchdowns, a 38-yard run by Montgomery and a 44-yard run by Joey Swaha to take a 14-0 lead. The Blue Devils (3-3, 3-0) added 21 points before halftime and never looked back.
Grayson County finished with 433 yards of total offense - 382 rushing - while holding Galax to 70 yards of total offense.
William Byrd 21, Alleghany 6: Quarterback Frank English accounted for 248 all-purpose yards and Michael Barry contributed two 30-yard field goals as the Terriers downed the visiting Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District matchup.
English ran 22 times for 178 yards and also passed for 70 yards. Sixty-two of those passing yards were to Berry, who also played wide receiver.
Kevin Cook put the Mountaineers (0-5, 0-2) on the board first with a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but Byrd (5-0, 2-0) dominated the rest of the way.
Narrows 30, Shawsville 14: David Turner rushed 20 times for 108 yards and scored two touchdowns in the decisive fourth quarter to the Green Wave past the Shawnees in a non-district game in Narrows.
Turner scored on runs of 38 and 2 yards as the Green Wave came back from a six-point third-quarter deficit. He also recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter that led to a score.
Teammate Keith Morris rushed 24 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns on scampers of 7 and 4 yards for Narrows (2-3).
Anthony Creasey recovered a fumble in the end zone as Shawsville (2-3) got on the board in the second quarter, and Chris Graham added a 7-yard scamper in the third quarter to stake the Shawnees to a 14-8 advantage.
Appomattox County 49, Staunton River 8: In Moneta, the Raiders (3-3, 3-3) overwhelmed the Golden Eagles (2-3, 2-3) in a Seminole District game.
Appomattox County fullback Nick Dillon rushed 24 times for 220 yards and one touchdown. Junior Forrest Moore rushed for more than 100 yards and scored four touchdowns. Quarterback Daniel Evans threw for two touchdowns.
The Raiders held Staunton River to 170 yards of total offense while rolling up 504 yards.
Fort Chiswell 34, Auburn 0: The Pioneers' offense kept the Eagles (3-3) off balance all night as Fort Chiswell (3-3) rolled up 415 yards in a non-district rout in Fort Chiswell.
Pioneers quarterback Adam Morgan completed seven of 11 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns, and Gary Arnold rushed for 125 yards.
Michael White caught three of Morgan's passes for 123 yards and Arnold caught a 34-yard touchdown strike.
The Eagles (3-3) mustered only 156 yards of offense.
Magna Vista 43, Gretna 6: Three Warriors runners accumulated at least 50 yards as Magna Vista mauled the Hawks in a Piedmont District matchup in Ridgeway.
Jermaine Simmons had nine rushes for 86 yards, quarterback Chad Blackstock ran five times for 76 yards and Ceron Penn had five carries for 61 yards.
Magna Vista (2-3, 2-2) broke open the game in the second quarter, and Simmons had a lot to do with it, rushing for two touchdowns and returning an interception for six points.
Gretna (0-5, 0-6) mustered just 76 yards of total offense.
Chatham 22, Bassett 12: In Chatham, the Cavaliers (3-2, 2-2) used two crucial fumbles by the Bengals (2-3, 2-2) to win a Piedmont District game.
The first Bassett fumble was returned 65 yards for a touchdown by defensive end Keith Smith. The second was a fumble on the Chatham 4-yard line that was recovered in the end zone.
The Bengals scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to make the score 14-12, but Chris Vaden returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory.
Fieldale-Collinsville 17, Tunstall 8: Mancino Craighead ran and kicked the Cavaliers (5-0, 4-0) to a victory over the Trojans (1-4, 0-4) in a Piedmont District matchup in Dry Fork.
Craighead rushed 10 times for 48 yards and also kicked a 30-yard field goal.
Ron Martin led Tunstall with nine rushes for 40 yards.
Abingdon 21, George Wythe 6: Diversity won out as the Falcons (3-3) downed the Maroons (1-5) in a non-district matchup.
Jason Smith was George Wythe's offense, rushing 17 times for 156 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
But Abingdon's mix of running and passing was too much, as Alvin Cowser led a herd of runners with 40 yards and Chris Spurlock and Scott Mashburn each had a rushing touchdown.
Abingdon quarterback Joey Wolfe passed for 103 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown strike to Angus Pchlya.
