ROANOKE BAND HOPING FOR A BREAK

The band that caused a bit of an uproar last year at the Blacksburg High School prom for, well, dressing like a band, has moved on to, well, rockier pastures.

On Thursday, the group, Alchemy, will be the first band to showcase at the new Hard Rock Cafe in Myrtle Beach, S.C., which is considered a plum gig for a rising band.

Alchemy is now based in Myrtle Beach, after relocating there from Roanoke in January.

It was May 1994 when the band played the Blacksburg prom in their usual stage wear of shorts and T-shirts. Afterward, the school refused to pay the group its $1,500 fee, claiming the band members should have worn more formal attire for the event.

Alchemy threatened legal action. MTV talked about covering the trial if it ever went to court, but the school paid up before it got that far.

Alchemy members include (from left): Slate, Kenny Seay, Kevin VonDerHofen, Kenny ``Bomp Pop'' St.Clair and Scott Davis.
