RUSH HOPES TO MAINTAIN MOMENTUM

The Roanoke Rush goes for its third consecutive National Minor League Football win when it plays the Washington Chiefs at Victory Stadium at 7 tonight.

Roanoke (3-3) moved into a third-place tie in the Mid-Atlantic Division of the NMLF with a 26-14 victory over the Washington Stonewalls last Saturday.

The Rush are looking for a season sweep of its Washington foes. Roanoke defeated the Chiefs 35-7 in Washington last month.

Cindy Rhinehart had two goals and an assist as Ferrum defeated Hollins 4-0 in a women's soccer match Friday at Ferrum. Erin Timothy added one goal and an assist and Kelly Webber chipped in a goal for the Panthers (6-4). Ferrum outshot Hollins 19-5 as goalkeeper Daniella Guisto picked up her second shutout of the year. Hollins is 3-8.

In Blacksburg, Virginia Tech's women's tennis team coasted through the first day of the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational, winning six of nine individual matches.

Top-seeded Katherine Chen wasted little time defeating Ashley Maner of Davidson, 6-0, 6-2. Second-seeded Jen Lampert won Virginia Tech's closest match of the three day event, downing James Madison's Karen Piorkowski, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Lampert teamed up with Daia Irvan to win the No.1 doubles match over North Carolina-Charlotte's Wendy Stephenson and Cheryl Lee, 8-1.

The tournament, which runs through Sunday, includes Tech, JMU, UNC Charlotte, Davidson, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, and North Carolina-Greensboro.

In Athens, Ga., Virginia Tech's men's tennis team had three singles players advance in the first day of the Southern Intercollegiates.

Oliver Mayo (3-0) led the Hokies with a victory over College of Charleston's Michael Baker, 6-1, 6-2. Aaron Marchetti (4-0) also stayed undefeated as he downed Charleston's Jason Parker, 6-1, 6-4. Marek Pfeil topped Alabama-Birmingham's Anthony Paron, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The largest purse in New River Valley Speedway history has jumped another $1,000 for the third annual New River Valley Chevy Dealers Late Model Stock Car Shoot-Out set for Oct.21.

Officials of Basham Oil, and Pennzoil, Roanoke, announced they will pay $1,000 to the driver leading at the halfway mark of the 250-lap NASCAR Winston Racing Series Late Model Stock Car feature.

In addition to the $10,000 grand prize, the race winner can pick up another $2,400 in contingency money and racing products gift certificates. Drivers making the 32-car starting field will battle for a share of the $33,500 purse.

The final race, which will be televised live by WDBJ TV-7, Roanoke, starting at 3 p.m., is expected to attract at least 75 of the top LMSC drivers in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Also on the card are 25 laps for the Pure Stocks and 25 for Legends Cars.
