INSURANCE BROKER NAMES CHIEF

GEORGE A. STEADMAN III has been named chairman of the executive committee and chief operating officer for Thomas Rutherfoord Inc., a Roanoke-based insurance brokerage with other offices in Alexandria, Norfolk and Richmond. In addition to his new duties, Steadman will continue managing the Roanoke division.

A chartered property and casualty underwriter, Steadman has more than 20 years in the insurance business and has been with Thomas Rutherfoord Inc. since 1986.

BANKING

RANDOLPH W. McELROY, president of NationsBank of Virginia, will retire from the bank at the end of the year. Following his retirement, NationsBank will consolidate its Virginia and Mid-Atlantic banking groups into a single team. GENE TAYLOR will be president of the Mid-Atlantic Banking Group and DOUG CRUICKSHANKS, formerly regional executive officer for NationsBank in Roanoke, will be president for the Virginia bank.

GOVERNMENT

JAMES M. TURNER JR., chief executive officer and board chairman of J.M. Turner Co. general contractors, has been appointed by Roanoke City Council to the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission, filling the unexpired term of Roanoke City Manager W. Robert Herbert. Turner's term will expire in 1999.

HEALTH CARE

MARILYN R. DONATO, a registered dietitian in private practice in Roanoke, has been elected president of the Roanoke Valley Academy of Medicine Alliance, an organization which supports health education and health service in the Roanoke area.

ROBERT CAMPBELL and KATHLEEN CARTER have been appointed primary substance abuse counselors at Mount Regis Center in Salem. Campbell has more than 18 years' experience in the substance abuse field, both in counseling and in employee assistance. Carter recently returned to Mount Regis after working in the chemical dependency field in Houston.

ROBERT LOGAN III has been named executive director of the Western Virginia Emergency Medical Services Council Inc., which provides medical training and emergency medical services administration in the Fourth, Fifth and Twelfth Planning Districts of Virginia and has offices in Salem, Radford, Martinsville and Alleghany County. Logan has been the council's training coordinator and then executive director from 1980-1985 and was most recently president of Logan Furniture Co. Inc. in Salem.

RICHIE ALBA, administrator of The Berkshire, a long-term care facility in Vinton, has been name vice chair of the Virginia Health Care Association. Other area officers are DEBORAH PETRINE, vice president of Smith/Packett Med-Com in Roanoke, AHCA representative; GERALD WILLIAMS, administrator of Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, Southern District chair; and NANCY WATERS, administrator of Heritage Hall in Blacksburg, Western District chair. STEVE MORRISETTE, formerly senior vice president of the North Carolina Hospital Association, has been named president of the association. H. TED RUSSELL of Salem has been presented the James G. Dunton Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to long-term care needs of Virginians.

MANUFACTURING

CLAUDE B. OWEN JR., chairman, president and chief executive officer of Dimon Inc. in Danville, has been elected chairman of the board of the Virginia Manufacturers Association. JOSEPH H. VIPPERMAN, president and chief operating officer of Appalachian Power Co. in Roanoke, has been elected treasurer. New elected directors include JUDI A. BARNES, secretary/treasurer of Barnes & Co. in Martinsville; TOM W. MASON, president and chief executive officer, Virginia Apparel Corp., Rocky Mount; RUSSELL L. SHADE, plant manager of General Electric Drive Systems in Salem; and DONALD G. SMITH, chairman and chief executive officer of Roanoke Electric Steel Corp.

RICHARD BOWLES has been appointed plant manager for Cassco Ice & Cold Storage Inc.'s ice production and distribution facility in Richmond. He most recently operated a Cassco distribution facility in Roanoke. Cassco is a subsidiary of Broadway-based WLR Foods Inc.

MEDICINE

DR. BARBARA C. MOORE has joined Physicians to Women Inc. in Roanoke, where she will practice obstetrics and gynecology.

DR. PENNY L. LAMPROS has become associated with Dr. Leo N. Lampros Ltd. in the practice of orthodontics. Lampros graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry and received her orthodontic certificate and master of science degree in dentistry from Indiana University.
