St. Albans gets a new physician

RADFORD - St. Albans Psychiatric Hospital has a new doctor who will specialize in general adult psychiatry.

J. Michael Rivard is a graduate of East Carolina University School of Medicine, and he performed his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Previously, Rivard was on the medical staff at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Rivard will provide outpatient care at the offices of Virginia Highland Health Associates in Radford and in Blacksburg.

Milenky to cover Blacksburg, business

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Roanoke Times has named Elissa Milenky as its reporter to cover Blacksburg and the New River Valley business beat.

Milenky comes to the paper's New River Bureau from The Times in Indiana, a 75,000-circulation paper that serves suburban areas in Indiana outside Chicago.

Milenky replaces Stephen Foster, who moved in September to Portland, Ore., to pursue graduate studies.

A graduate of Indiana University where she was editor in chief of its campus newspaper, Milenky has also had internships at the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times.

Tracy Gallimore has moved to the New River Bureau's news department as an editorial assistant.

Gallimore writes the weekly "For Seniors" column as well as compiling the Sunday Current Events calendar.

Gallimore worked for AT&T for 13 years in a number of positions, including marketing and training, in New Jersey, North Carolina and Virginia. She is a graduate of Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C.

Gallimore formerly worked for the newspaper's Advertising Department in the New River Bureau. She replaces Rick Lindquist, who moved to Connecticut.

Radford directory soon on the Web

RADFORD - The city's Chamber of Commerce will soon offer a directory of its business and professional members on the Internet's World Wide Web.

The directory will include a description of each member's business or profession. Also in development is a home page with information about the city and the chamber. The home page will include demographic information, facts for new residents, tourists, businesses and retirees, and a list of services that the chamber provides. The information will be updated regularly.

The web site address for the chamber's home page is http://webstation.com/radford. The address for the directory has not been finalized yet. Both web sites will be on line Nov. 1.

Council joins Enterprise Network

CHRISTIANSBURG - The New River-M

To qualify for membership, the council had to get at least 75 on a customer satisfaction survey and have placed at least 80 percent of the workers it has trained.

The council comprises business, civic, educational and labor leaders from the New River Valley, and Washington, Smyth, Wythe, Bland, Grayson and Carroll counties. In operation since 1983, the council operates eight work-force development centers that serve about 2,000 people each year.

Chain saw safety seminar Saturday

CHRISTIANSBURG - All Seasons Lawn and Garden Center on Roanoke Street in Christiansburg will host a chain saw safety seminar Saturday.

The seminar will include demonstrations on safe cutting techniques, proper clothing and maintenance. More than 1 million chain saws are sold in the United States each year.
