Wytheville practice affiliated with Carilion

WYTHEVILLE - A physicians' practice in Wytheville has become affiliated with Carilion Health Systems Inc.

Family Physicians of Wytheville Ltd. with offices on West Ridge Road recently told its patients of the affiliation. Its physicians are Drs. Walter Barton, James Stone, James Booker and Wayne Horney.

Carilion already has a presence in Wytheville through its contract to manage Wythe County Community Hospital. The hospital's top three officers are Carilion employees, but the hospital itself remains independent.

Rescue squad members recognized

WYTHEVILLE - Several Wythe County Rescue Squad members gained recognition at the 61st annual Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads Convention in Roanoke last month.

Becky Hudson, the first woman accepted into Wythe County Rescue Squad membership, received a life membership in the state association. That is the highest honor bestowed on any association member.

She joined the squad in 1977, and received life membership designation locally in 1987. She has been treasurer, training officer, sergeant and infection control officer in her squad and has held a number of posts in the state association as well. She is currently a vertical rescue instructor and search and rescue instructor.

She has been president of her squad's emergency medical technician team since it started in 1980, and of the vertical rescue team that participates annually in association competition. Her father, the late Howard Price, was also a life member of the Wythe squad where he served for 28 years, and her husband, Roger Hudson, earned life membership in the state association in 1992.

She works as safety/quality management coordinator at Wythe County Community Hospital.

"I was the first woman accepted into membership of the WCRS, the first woman given life membership in WCRS, the first woman to be elected as a state officer of the VAVRS, the first woman to be a vertical rescue instructor, and now the first woman to be given life membership in the VAVRS," she said. "My rescue squad circle is complete."

Capt. Paul Callahan was sworn in as vice president of the district covering 33 squads from Blacksburg to Marion and Bluefield to Cana. He will preside over all district meetings, serve as district transportation officer, and as a judge for awards at next year's annual convention at Virginia Beach.

Sandra Gravley, WCRS Auxiliary member since 1985, was installed as state parliamentarian in the VAVRS Auxiliary.
