HOKIES GAME NOTES

As soon as the Virginia Tech offense hung up seven points on the board Saturday at Navy, Cornell Brown said he knew the Hokies were home free in a 14-0 victory.

"As soon as we got seven, I felt that was definitely enough the way our defense was playing,'' Tech's star defensive end said.

He was right. Navy never got a whiff of the end zone all day as Tech posted its first shutout on the road in 12 years. The Hokies' last road shutout was a 48-0 win at Virginia in the final game of 1983.

Brown was everywhere, making a team-high 13 tackles to go along with 2.5 sacks and two more tackles for loss.

Was it the Lynchburg native's best game ever at Tech?

"Yeah, I'd have to say so,'' he said. "I played four quarters today and had an effect on the whole game throughout.''

PRICE IS RIGHT

Senior defensive end J.C. Price, who grew up in Dunkirk, Md., some 20 miles down the road from Annapolis, had a banner homecoming.

Price, despite playing with a heavy cast on his left arm, had two sacks among his eight tackles.

"I can't say enough about J.C. Price,'' said Bud Foster, Tech co-defensive coordinator. "He's our bell cow inside. When that last game is over, I'm sure going to hate to see him go.''

Price had to wear the cast after hyper-extending his left elbow in practice this past week.

"My shoulder is dead,'' Price said after the game. "It was a big ol' heavy cast. It's something I had to do to play, though. Nothing was going to keep me out of this game.''

INJURY REPORT

Tech has to be concerned about Bryan Still. The senior flanker left the game early in the fourth quarter after re-aggravating the right shoulder that he separated in the season opener against Boston College.

"Somebody fell on it and it's real sore,'' Still said.

Still, who missed two games due to the injury, is critical to a Tech offense that has had trouble catching passes.

Backup junior offensive tackle T.J. Washington also left the game early due to an injury to his left knee. He will be evaluated today.
