Potts, who refused to apologize Monday for comments he made during a speech at a GOP rally Saturday, tried to make amends Tuesday morning.
``I've done some stupid things in my life, and this is one of them,'' Potts said.
Potts said at a fund-raising event Saturday night that Democrats were ``going to pull out all the trick plays of slime, sleaze and lies. The guy who crafted their whole campaign was Goebbels.''
Joseph Goebbels was Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister.
Potts on Monday said his remark was an attempt to point out ``the big lie-type campaign'' he accused his opponent, Democrat Thomas A. Lewis, of running. But he added that perhaps he should have compared Lewis to President Clinton, ``the most current natural big-lie guy I know.''
``I can deal with schoolyard name-calling'' because they are ``meaningless remarks,'' Lewis said.
But Tuesday, Potts said he realized it was a mistake made in the ``heat of a campaign battle.''
``There is not a mean-spirited bone in my body. I am a kind and caring person. But I am also a competitive person,'' Potts said.
