STUDENT ARRESTED ON RAPE CHARGES

Salem police arrested a Roanoke College student Wednesday after a female student accused him of raping her after a party Sunday night.

Jose Marcial Cortez-Ruiz, 21, of Alexandria was arrested on charges of rape and two counts of sodomy, Sgt. D.R. Divers said.

The woman, 18, called police Tuesday and said that a male acquaintance forced her to have sex after Sunday night's party, Divers said.

The incident allegedly occurred in an apartment on West Main Street in Salem, off the Roanoke College campus.

Cortez-Ruiz has been released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. Divers said the case remains under investigation.
