EXPRESS MAKES FINAL ROSTER CUTS

The Roanoke Express trimmed its roster to 20 players by releasing defenseman Mike Larkin and forward Pete Rutili on Wednesday.

The moves reduced the Express' roster to the maximum number of players allowed under East Coast Hockey League rules.

The Express, which completed its exhibition schedule with a 3-0 record capped by Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Hampton Roads Admirals, opens the regular season against the defending Riley Cup champion Richmond Renegades at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Roanoke Civic Center.

Washington and Lee freshman Sam Chase recorded a hat trick and an assist to lead the Generals in a 5-0 rout of Bridgewater in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer game in Bridgewater.

Chase leads the ODAC in scoring with 13 goals. The Generals (6-4 overall, 3-4 conference) also got goals from Chad Dobbins and Brent Christ. Bridgewater is 2-11, 0-6.

Darrell Etienne scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 23 minutes into the match as Virginia Commonwealth held VMI to five shots en route to a 2-0 non-conference men's soccer victory in Lexington.

Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi scored the second goal, and goalkeeper Jim Larkin had to make only one save in recording his fifth shutout for the Rams (5-8). VMI is 5-8.

Top-ranked Virginia extended its unbeaten streak in men's soccer to 21 games, but it wasn't as easy as expected. The Cavaliers built a 4-0 halftime lead, then held on for a 7-5 victory in Charlottesville.

Mike Fisher, a junior midfielder, had a goal and an assist for UVa (11-0-1), giving him 101 points for his career. Navy is 6-5-0.

Allison Carr scored in the last minute of regulation to lead Old Dominion past Virginia Tech 2-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game in Norfolk.

The Hokies (2-10-2) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Michele Hager in the 72nd minute, but the Monarchs responded with a goal by Sonia Antunes 10 minutes later, setting up Carr's game-winner.

Tina Boyce scored three goals to lead Roanoke College past Randolph-Macon Woman's College 4-0 in an ODAC field hockey game in Salem. Ali Oglesby added the final goal for the Maroons (9-1), and Jen Pohanka picked up the shutout with six saves.

Nate Derstine and Jason Moyer scored two goals each to lead Eastern Mennonite past Roanoke College 4-2 in an ODAC men's soccer game at River's Edge Sports Complex.

Sam Starkweather and Ryland Dennis scored the goals for the Maroons, with Shane Cason assisting on both.

Mark Fry of Roanoke Country Club and Chip Sullivan of Hanging Rock Golf Club were part of a four-way tie for eighth place after the first round of the Middle Atlantic PGA Section Tournament of Champions.

Fry and Sullivan shot par-72, leaving them three strokes behind co-leaders Robert Leeman, Dennis Winters and Wayne DeFrancesco at Old South Country Club. Billy King of Blue Hills Golf Club was in a four-way tie for 12th at 73. The tournament concludes today.

Will Lovelace of George Wythe fired a 73 to win medalist honors in the Hogoheegee District golf tournament at Wytheville Country Club.

Lovelace, Brian Love, Matt Smiley, Joannah Pattison and Justin Padjen helped George Wythe win the team title with 307, finishing 46 strokes ahead of second-place Patrick Henry-Glade Spring. Love finished in second in the individual competition with a 74.
