GILLISPIE, Melinda Dawn, 30, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, October 11, 1995. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, and was a graduate of Cave Spring High School. She was an inspiration and touched many lives. Surviving are her parents, Donald and Shirley Gillispie, Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Pamela J. and Jerry L. Scott, Roanoke; three nieces, Amanda Scott, Michigan, Ashley Scott and Angela Scott, both of Roanoke; one nephew, Richard Scott, also of Roanoke; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. KIENAST, Walter D., 61, of 101 Apartment-A Lovely Mount Drive, Radford, died early Monday morning, October 9, 1995, in the Richfield Nursing Home, Salem. He was born December 27, 1933 in Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. and was the son of the late Walter Henry Kienast and Vira Baker K. Douglass. Mr. Kienast was disabled for 31/2 years following a traumatic head injury. He was an employee of Volvo-GM, Dublin, having 16 years of service. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Radford, VA. Surviving are his wife, Karen R. Kienast, Radford; one daughter, Wendy K. Davis, Salem; stepfather, Urban R. Douglass, Sylvatus; three half-brothers, Ray Douglass, N.Y., Roger Douglass, Sylvatus, John Douglass, Sylva tus. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 15, 1995, at 7 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Tyler Avenue, Radford, Va., with Elder Verlin G. Wygal officiating. She was born in Patrick County May 29, 1916, daughter of the late Robert Martin Gilbert Sr. and the late Mary Bessie Gregory Gilbert. She was also preceded in death by a son, Garland E. Gilbert in 1977 and her husband, Ted G. Kirby Sr. in 1982. She was a member of the Stuart United Methodist Church. She is survived by one son, Ted G. Kirby Jr., of Stuart; one daughter, Mary Helen Kirby of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Bob Gilbert of Martinsville; two sisters, Lois E. Gilbert and Lottie C. MITCHELL, John Carroll Sr., 87, of Bedford, died Wednesday, October 11, 1995, in a local rest home. He was born in Bedford County, November 16, 1907, the last surviving of 11 children of the late Willie Edward Mitchell and Lelia Alice Hodges Mitchell. his wife was the late Thelma Elizabeth Krantz Mitchell. He was a retired merchant and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. He was a faithful member of the Liberty Masonic Lodge #95 AF & AM for over 65 years, where he served in all lodge offices and was coach and teacher to many. He was also a District Deputy for the Grand Lodge. He is survived by his son, the Rev. John Carroll Mitchell Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Bedford; five grandchildren, Karen M. Mitchell, Brian J. Mitchell, Bryan K. Aud, Becky J. Aud and Brandon K. Aud; one great-grandson, Denver Kyle Aud. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 1995, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. D. Glen Langston and Dr. Carl H. Douglass Jr. officiating. PERNA, Mary Elizabeth, (``Betty""), 77, of ``The Source,"" Browntown, died Saturday, October 7, 1995, at home from cancer. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. November 11, 1995, at the Perna Farm in Browntown. Mrs. Perna was born May 4, 1918, in Mineola, N.Y., daughter of the late James Hartney and Ellen Petersen Silliman. She received a BA degree in Speech and Drama from Syracuse University in 1939. She married Anthony J. ``Bud"" Perna (Col. Ret. USA F) December 22, 1940, and embarked on a 30 year career as an Air Force wife with many notable accomplishments. She established programs for military dependants, served with her husband in three diplomatic assignments in England, France, and Israel, served as hostess for the American Ambassador while in Israel, and organized a biblical archeology study for diplomats wives in the Holy Land. While in Israel, she helped establish a school for deaf children called ``Micha."" Her service and committment to the communities where she lived extended beyond her military wife's role. Surviving with her husband are three daughters, Christine Perna Vishneski of Shawsville, Ellen Perna Smith of Bear Creek, Penn., and Betty Grace P. Phillips of Monkton, Md.; a son, Tony Jim Perna of Miami, Fla.; sisters, Dorothy Wehmeyer and Martha Bodwell; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, Va. 22601. Arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal, Va.
